I mono ski & wakeboard! Admitedly its been a year or so since I was last in the water great fun though, a great way to keep fit and enjoy the exhileration of speed.

Ive taught a good few M8's to waterski, with propper instruction you shouuld be out the water prety quickly, the key to learning is having an experienced driver behind the wheel of the boat. Throttle control is everything especialy with a beginer behind/at the side of you.

If you can find somewhere that has a pole out the side of the boat then that is by far the easiest way to learn, as your able to focus on what your doing rather than having a rope thrown into the equasion.

Best way to learn is on 2 ski's. Mono ski'ing will take ages, often years to learn, and even at that there are often waterskiers that just cant manage to get up on the one ski.

Get out and give it a go! It really is great fun

Most has been said by B8.

Skiing can be great fun and is actually quite easy to learn if you have someone who can communicate well and is in the water at the back of the learner.

Myself and brother were 100% self-taught and I was on combis (2 skis) on my third attempt and could deep water start a mono in less than a year.

That not to say I was mega cool, we took a girl with us and she got up on the first go.

I think things you did as a kid help a lot i.e. anything to do with balance and foot control.

We learnt and (till we stopped) always skied on inland waters (i.e. Windermere and the river weaver) as the sea is a pain in the arse if you want to carve big turns. Also puts the boat maintenance up and the resale value down.

If you can find somewhere to do it go for it. It’s a great buzz and surprisingly hard work once you start to cut hard as you are fighting the pull of the boat to gain acceleration.

Anyone who’s skied behind a master craft or similar will confirm – they have no forgiveness and the slightest mistake will hurt your arms badly (if you a silly coont like me and don’t let go easily).

Ever had whiplash ? you better get accustomed to it !

Used to live on Abu Dhabi island (Middle East) when I was a young 'un. Has a speed boat then, and I was water skiing and knee-boarding when I was 6/7 yrs old and mono-skiing at about 11 years.

Last tried mono-skiing 2 years ago and I've still got it!
Could only manage about 6 minutes though - was properly knackered. Outta practice.

Once tried it in the UK on one of those cable systems. Real hard and it was cold and when I feel off half way round I had to swim/walk for ages to get back to the start.

Cable skiining is a great way to learn on the cheap

I learned to mono ski in Aus on a cable using the jump start method

Comes in handy for beach starts in the country when the water is freezing

i did have a pretty big accident in 2002 though when i collided with the jetty & caught my arm in a cleat
nearly ripped it off & involved air ambulance etc so take care

Still love it though - just looking at a new boat In fact called the guy this week
Looking forward to a fun summer next year with boats & track days

Been water-skiing since I was 11. Once you learn mono, you never go back to two skis . Easiest way to learn mono is to get out of water on two and kick one off .

As Andy says, getting out of the water even for experienced mono skiers needs a driver who knows how you "like it", as each person has a different prefered method .
