Skiing can be great fun and is actually quite easy to learn if you have someone who can communicate well and is in the water at the back of the learner.
Myself and brother were 100% self-taught and I was on combis (2 skis) on my third attempt and could deep water start a mono in less than a year.
That not to say I was mega cool, we took a girl with us and she got up on the first go.
I think things you did as a kid help a lot i.e. anything to do with balance and foot control.
We learnt and (till we stopped) always skied on inland waters (i.e. Windermere and the river weaver) as the sea is a pain in the arse if you want to carve big turns. Also puts the boat maintenance up and the resale value down.
If you can find somewhere to do it go for it. It’s a great buzz and surprisingly hard work once you start to cut hard as you are fighting the pull of the boat to gain acceleration.
Anyone who’s skied behind a master craft or similar will confirm – they have no forgiveness and the slightest mistake will hurt your arms badly (if you a silly coont like me and don’t let go easily).
Ever had whiplash ? you better get accustomed to it !
