I've heard quite much good of the never range of starters used in new Fiestas etc. They fit the CVH directly, are smaller and spin the engine much faster with less current. Quite affordable from Ford too, I have understood. Because they are smaller, they don't sit so close to the downpipe. The old diesel starter is a powerfull unit, but huge.

Yeah they fit, but as said, they are massive. A Mate (who shall remain nameless) has one on his RST, and it looks like it's from a Lorry

Mr C knows of a Bosch one that fits that is tiny and like twice the power of a standard RST Starter. Drop him a PM

As Jesse says. Forget diesel ones - they WONT help. a low comp rst doesnt need power to start.

If u goto ford now, and ask them for a starter for an RST - they will give u the modern type as used on current cars - it's smaller and MUCH better.

Good thing about turbo cars is they are low compression and hence easy to turn over, so pretty much any starter will be fine if you keep the heat off it.

You want to by this genuine Ford one
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MESE%3AIT&rd=1

I bought it from Ford 2 months ago after trying 3 different crap recon's and after market jobbies, this is the best Ford do, its the most powerful one they list (1.4kw) and its the newer smaller lighter version for better turbo clearance. Its brand new and all its done is turn my old engine over about three times, cost over £100 plus exchange so its a bargin! and you know it works!

Recon starters are your old starter cleaned out, painted black and then sold back to you.

After many recon starters, I got pissed off and fitted a new Ford one which cost me £60 exchange with my trade discount and it's been absolutely spot on since.

Sometimes, the cheap option is not worth fucking about with...
