can any one help i have a mk4 escort xr3i the efi version the problems are when im driving and say pull upto a junction the revs drop and the engine cuts out it starts straight away again also when driving especialy around town the car seems to jerk and is hesitant what could it be help

try cleaning out the breathers too

plugs and leads are fine checked the breathers ther ok to any other ideas

is there excess crank pressure? take the oil cap off and see if it stalls

Thats good news! could have been expensive....

next step would be to clean through the throttle body then could be a potentiometer/throttle switch problem.

cleaned the throttle body little bit better what was that other thing you mentioned

potentiometer is the module on the side of the throttle that reads how far open it is.

Its your idle speed control valve it happened on my old 3i and now on my cabby.On my old car i replaced nearly everything before i changed it.But when you order one be careful as there is 2 types hitachi and bosch different no of houles one is 80 the other is 120.the bosch is more expensive hope this helps.

Hi there,

That happened on my xr3i (90spec with efi engine). I changed the plugs, leads, mixture pot(on inner wing), cleaned the idle control valve, air filter, all to no avail.

The result was that the throttle stop bends on the throttle body, try opening it a couple of thou, by bending it slightly and im pretty sure that will fix. It doesnt cost you anything either!! I think they just bend after thousands of throttle opening and closings.
