Default What's it take to get 180bhp out of a 2.0ltr N/A Zetec?

Just wondering as it looks like my plans to build a cossie are being scuppered by the local council and their extremely long waiting list for a lock-up

I was wondering what kind of money it would take and what would be involved in acheiving said bhp from said engine. I'm thinking chip, exhaust, cams, headwork, i.e. gas flowed head or ported head or something and throttle bodies.

Is there anything I've missed and any ideas on what costs roughly what?

Cheers!

you're mad... stick it on carbs (45s) for 170-175 or throttle bodies for 180ish. no need fo rcams/headwork at that power lever

I was thinking of putting it into a mk6 Escort Si tho, so won't carbs cause it to fails the emissions test?

I actually thought I'd need all the other work

Which throttle bodies (and/or carbs if they won't screw up the emissions) can you guys reccomend and where do i find them?

standard cams keep the engine nice n torquey low down
cheap easy power if you're not fussed about big numbers... if you blow it up get another zetec for 100 quid from any breakers

Anything from 180bhp - 200bhp will more than keep me happy for the time being.

Just out of curiosity, how much harder is it to achieve this from the 1.8 engine?

not sure about the 1.8 to be honest.
as for the throttle bodies, you can use ones off a bike with cheap aftermarket ecu of some kind if you really want to avoid the carbs (mine are weber 45dcoes) .. not sure if he posts on here but rchambers on turbosport.co.uk got his mk2 running using bike TBs. Alternatively Jenvey or similar would be able to supply suitable trottle bodies, possibly a smaller size (42mm?) as they're more efficient than carbs. ECU could be more expensive with thre TBs though as obviously it then has to control injectors, but just ignition only.
I don't think it's relevant in your case, but apparently the MOT emissions test is done according to whatever's older - the enigne or the car.. so my mk2 will be tested according to 1980 levels despite running a zetec engine.

You can get 180 BHP about of the 1.8 Zetec using carbs, Hathaway racing did a blue Escort Cabriolet that was in Fast Ford a few years ago.

Yeah but if I use carbs, I will surely fail the MOT emissions test as mentioned, will I not?

You could use an ST170 motor on motorbike throttle bodies and get a very cheap, quick old motor, and I beleive with a vernier pulley on the exhaust cam a few more ponies can be extracted.

Dave Colledge at Retro Ford has one fitted to his MkII Escort development car and one of his customers has one in an Anglia (www.retro-ford.co.uk)

As for emissions, talk to Troy at Northampton Motorsport, they have a customer who converted his Focus to run on Throttle Bodies and weber management and as far as I know it can all be mapped to be MOT friendly.

Hope that helps

Sure Perfromance Ford did a small feature on a kit that you can buy that instantly gives you over 200bhp, obviously think it involves Throttle Bodies etc etc...

You'll have to check the mag (was in the last few issues) as I cant remember exactly and not sure on th exact engine!

A 2litre Zetec pushing 180+bhp with no turbo or nitrous, and just bolt-on mods

I cant see it, not even on EAs rollers

i'm 99.9% sure mine did 172bhp at track&road rollers which are supposed to be very very reliable.. apart from the sump and water rail (changed to help the install in a mk2 escort) bog standard 2.0 zetec on 45s with emerald management.

afaik you're not getting to 200 without changing the cams though.

SeanT... for information

Tony Maddens Zetec Anglia made 168bhp on Weber Alpha & 45's

Daves MkII Escort made 170bhp on the bike throttle bodies

Jon the boys ST170 Anglia made 189.6 bhp * on bike throttle bodies with vernier on exhaust cam.

A Kit car that Retro Ford installed an ST170 motor in on Weber Alpha made 170bhp

* Denotes is was set up and roller'ed at Emerald, the other vehicles were done at Northampton Motorsport.

After talking to Dave, the best you can hope for from an 1800 without serious work is 160BHP

I he is.
The reason he didn't build a Zetec turbo is that there's so many about and was sick of seeing them he wanted to be different.

Ours made 192 bhp in out Fiesta, could of been more with a better inlet set up and longer horns etc but it was a real tight squeeze and I would of needed to remove the heater blower etc to do it.

Jenvey 45 TB's short raceline inlet, Omex mgmt, cossie injectors custom exhaust etc. NA tuning is not easy takes a lot of work to get big power hence I now have a cossie

The plug cover should be available from eBay.

180bhp from a bolt on throttle body or Weber 45 kit will not happen on a 2.0L zetec.

Both these kits shift the power band of the engine further up, meaning you need higher lift cams to take advantage. Hotter cams actually come part of the kits!

A friend of mine built a 1.8 zetec on Weber Alpha throttle bodies. Worked head, high lift Piper cams (lairer than those supplied in the kit!), ARP bottom end bolts to rev to 7000rpm, and a 4-2-1 exhaust manifold, and decat.

It made 165bhp on Northampton M/sports rollers, which are about as accurate as you can get.

Expect to see 180bhp max on a decent rolling road with the above equipment on a 2.0L

LOL @ whoever said "nice lot of torque"... N/A tuning gives minimal torque gains compared to the bhp gained. The above engine gained about 16lb/ft.

A friend has an I4 (2.0) on Jenvey bodies, rough spec similiar to the zetec. That has 8lb/ft more than standard, yet the engine produces 180bhp.

One massive advangate of either kit..... is the noise!!

I have bought the car which has the TB'd 1.8 zetec.... will enjoy bolting the top end on my 2.0 escort over the winter!!

My plug cover came from Lee at Fusion Fabrication as did most of the other bling bits. Top work
As I said before the NA tuning is real hard work to get small gains, I enjoyed doing it as I wanted something different and it sounded awesome but given my time again I would probably go ZT as you get more for your money.
I think the pic of the engine in the red car is freak powers car, that is a serious bit of kit but if similar money had been spen on a ZT I expect far greater results would have been achieved (though I suspect he built it for the same reason I did to be different).

But aren't the costs of building a ZT quite high? What kind of work and cost is involved in turning a 2.0 Zetec into a 200bhp Zetec Turbo?

Obviously, I don't really know much at all about tuning, hence the questions on here, so try not to take the piss

The normal conversion is a 2.1 Zetec Turbo, I'd imagine you're looking at Ł3000+ for the work and engine etc.

this is my effort, suszuki GSXR tb's on a 2.0l, although i never had them 100% set-up they were making at least 170bhp

spec:

2.0l zetec
Kent cams
skimmed head and block
focus rs headgasket
45mm GSXR throttle bodies
Saph cos blue injectors
vauxhall fuel rail
focus ST170 4-2-1 manifold
SECS S8 management

i then sold them to a mate with similar spec engine, but OMEX management and he cracked 192 bhp

in this months fast ford in the TRAX report, escort cabby
