for peeps who have coilover setup on the rear mk3/4 escort
most kits come with telescopic rears and lowering springs. The turrets are not designed to take the load that a coilover puts on them so all the kit manafacturers insist you strengthen the rear if you want to fit a complet kit. Not seen one done myslef unfortunatley but I would think someone like Zoo Motorsport would be able to help you out here

i'd like more info on this too, pics especially
*hint hint* cos i want coilovers for my RS16i, and would prefer to alter the rear strut tops now if required before it goes into the paintshop.

up im now hearing mixed responses
just been told the 4 coilover setup will fit but advised to use rear brace and seam weld the turrets
anyone give me a 100% definate

Sorry I have mislead you I think
Some coilovers will fit straight onto the mk3/4 escort without need to modify anything at all.
However it is advisable to at least strengthen the top mounts at the turrets.
With a specailly modified top hat, the GAZ kits will fit with full height adjustment, and a slightly smaller diameter spring.
I can do this kit at the same price as the others, with the top hat.
The minimum requirement for the suspension to work properly is a rear strut brace/ brace bar.
The ideal requirement would be to Turret the rears (seam weld or at least re-strengthen).

Before I changed to proper Bilsteins on the rear I ran relativly sucessfully (on a Mk4) with either standard Motorcraft dampers converted with coilover tubes, or Koni adjustables again converted with coilover tubes.
The car had no seam welding or rear strut brace in place and sucessfully competed in over 100 stage rally's.
The main issue I had was that both would bend down at the bottom where it goes into the hub if I hit any sort of rough road going sideways at speed.
The Konis were FAR worse at doing this and I must have got through about 15 of them, I approached Koni at a trade show to see if they could help and they just fobbed me off and told me tough, if you think you can do any better then go and do it
The conversion was done to a standard unit by placing the correct sized threaded sleeve over the original strut and tack welding it in place. An extended steel top hat was made to hold the spring in place and fit it all back up into the turret. Cost was less than Ł80 (back then).
Not once did the turrets try to rip apart, split, crack or do anything of the kind - and this was a well used motorsport car remember.
Learning and observing from the motorsport use what was happening to the spring top mounts, these were then modded further by MEF, to assist in shock loadings. These new units are still being used today on my car (which is seam welded and braced - just for my safety). The casings used now are thick walled CDS tubing coupled with inverted Bilstein dampers, this has completely overcome the bending issues.
Make of that what you will...... its just a "for info" post
Oh and here's my old car

Which set up ?
Most of it is in your head Keith, but the times did come down with a half decent set-up yes. At the end of the day its still a compromise set-up Im running now. The car handles well on the stages and is still comfortable to drive on the road.

About 4 years back Ahmed B was working on a multi link set up for the rear using coil overs -couldnt be too hard to come up with yourself - why not get something like that drawn up, made and sold to like minded souls on here?
