me and my mate have just done a rebuild on my cos and up to now we have had it down at santa pod q-mile and then fitted a t34 and 500 cooler and dark greens and all the rest that goes with it, then put it on the roling road and got 350bhp at the wheels, done 4000 miles and it is still going strong. i think it was an easy job as long as you ar prety handy on the tools but i saved my self Ł2500 on the price i had

Done a complete Engine rebuild myself. Very easy, satisfying, and cheap(er than getting someone else to do it for you)

Do it your self!!! Piss easy engine to work on...just a pinto with a 16v head at end of the day. Take your time, be methodical and dont cut corners and you'll have a good engine along with the satisfaction that you built it up and the satisfaction that you saved a stack load of beer tokens in the process

No reason you cant do it yourself, Imo you should get head reworked by a machine shop ( new guides etc) have the engine and crank checked.
If you are doing a full rebuild and depending on mile history etc I would use new pistons and uprated oil pump. use all genuine bearings etc
Make sure you keep everything clean from dust, dirt etc, and dont skimp on the running in process,
Sounds like alot of time and money, well it is, but if it needs to be done do it right, once and you will still save alot of money

Oh and dont forget if your not sure about something, Ask the question

me and my mate are doing mine at the mo

Like dean said i've had the head rebuilt by a specialist as that bit is a bit too complicated for DIY but everything else is pretty straight forward

DIY. Did mine recently, just running in and all seems fine, also means you can spend the money you save by doing diy on better parts.

here my 2pence worth,

DIY builds are ok but you will make errors and must be prepared to spend a bit of money just cause its DIY dosnt mean its cheap!!

why do you think there are specialists around if they are so easy to build??

if you are building a completley standard build then i dont see a problem with DIY but as long as you are competent, i have seen so many DIY builds that are just shite and the owner thinks they are brilliant, hoses diconnected/parts not put back on/rounded off bolts etc...

another hard thing to do is finding a machine shop that you trust, not as easy as it sounds!!

a specialist will have made these contacts/equipment already, you will have to start from stratch.

good luck with your build matey

About to do a short motor recon on my 2wd motor...

Cant see any real problems with it over any other motor... with all motors you gotta get it right, not round off bolts, replace worn parts... Cossie is no different...

Not a fraction as difficult as rebuilding a 200bhp r1 superbike motor..

How much are you looking at for doing the rebuild yourself with all the bits?
