this cant be true as your computer can't be turned on remotely!!!! However if you go out and leave your PC on, well thats a different matter.

So your basically saying that somebody dials your phone number turns the pc on and then views your data? Sorry but this is complere rubbish. Granted if your pc was switched on and you where connect to your broadband account then there is a chance you can be hacked.

As an example using the fastest computers available today to hack or view your bank account details that uses 128 bit encryption would take 20,000 years and the equipment would cost well over $400,000,000, So I think the "mate" that knows all about these puters aint a hope.

Check this link for more info on secure sites http://www.mycrypto.net/encryption/e...ion_crack.html

The only chance would be if you saved your login details and password in a word processed file and they downloaded this, which is as stupid as writing your visa pin number on the card itself.

If they RING YOUR PHONE (which would tend to imply they're using a phone, not a modem), then there is absolutely no way they can get any information from your computer, or even work out if you have a computer on the end of the phone-line!

Also, assuming they were using a computer and not a phone, see the below project-statistics for an indication of how difficult it is to crack 128-bit encryption (the below isn't even for 128-bit, it's for 64-bit - see the bits in bold for the important info):

RC5-64 encryption test:

Total Blocks to Search: 68,719,476,736
Total Blocks Tested: 56,878,907,073
Overall Rate: 381 Blocks/sec
Total Keys to Search: 18,446,744,073,709,552,000
Total Keys Tested: 15,268,315,356,922,380,000
Overall Rate: 102,385,059,633 Keys/sec
Percent Complete: 82.770%
Time Working: 1,726 days

There have been 328,140 participants
since the beginning of this project.
15,578 of them were active yesterday

and of those, 3 were brand-new participants.
That's a lot of computers working together to try to get through a 64-bit encryption key...

Software like that's been around for years, though, but unless you leave yourself WIDE open (ie. no firewall, no anti-virus software, no spyware-protection, etc), no proper hacker is going to take the time to bother to get into your computer to use it, not unless you're on a HUGE network with a FAST connection (leased line).

For those who were online quite a few years ago, remember the break-out of SubSeven? All it needed was a single virus-infected file run on a computer, and voila, the SubSeven client could be used to take FULL control of that computer remotely......the client could be used to do anything from moving/removing/copying files, taking control of any IM software, viewing the webcam (if one connected), even opening/closing the CD-tray. It was even set up to have an infected computer invisibly connect to an IRC server, jump into a channel, and broadcast its IP address and announce that it was infected, all so people with the SubSeven client could then remote-control it...

why hack any old pc? no real gain from it, most peoples pc's are full of porn and mp3's, so they would be better off hacking a big company.
But even then, i dont believe it, cos its POINTLESS!

If someone has a very fast connection and a server people hack in to use the bandwidth for sharing files but would be no point with a home pc as even the fastest broadband has no use to them and if pc is turned off it cannot be accessed its impossible.
