You told me to call you but it isnt easy fitting around work and a different hemisphere. I can see where you are coming from in his case but if I were in your position (and I deal with international customers) I would be a bit more flexible on emails. Also if you like people to call you, while publicise an email address.

I dont have a problem with him e/mailing me , its the fact that he asked me to call him back that pissed me of,
If he wanted to talk about things why didnt he call me ?? but no , he expects me to call him back at my expense ,

Remember that 50% of all the people i talk to on the phone are complete idiot timewasters , if i called all them back i would be out of business in a month

the other 50% are good decent people

Say what you think mate ,
Its maybee just me , but I wouldnt e/mail anyone , ask them a one line question and ask them to call me back , I would expect a reply from the e./mail , but nothing more as that is the method of comms he wanted to use ,
As said if he had called me i would call him back without a second thought , but i will not talke a e/mail asking me to call you back , thats just not the correct thing to do ( or is it just me )

I see what you are saying with having to call people back and wasting your time and money mate but if I email from Australia after some bits wouldnt you think I was in the 50% serious bracket, to have made that effort especially as I wanted a few bits?

I am lucky that i am not that desperate to make a sale ,, as said i would rather sell to anyone who helps themself ,

Think about it ,,, if i did return all the e/mails i get asking me to call them back , what would my phone bill be like ,

Also , as asid ,, would you e/mail tesco and ask them to call you back ?? NO so why would you expect me to do it

If you wish to e/mail me i will reply when i can , no probs , or if you call me i will talk to to as long as is required to help you but i am not a free message center or advise line to anyone .

For the record, I wouldnt ever email someone and ask them to call me unless I had tried repeatidly to call them myself and could substantiate that which is the part I agree with you on Paul.

I admit i am not perfect mate and i do miss replying to people when i am busy but i do try hard
Please remeber , i
1,answer the phone , and e/mails
2, collect the cars
3, strip the cars
4,rack the parts
5, wrap and send the parts
6, clean the workshop
7, deal with all the paperwork / accounts
etc myself
8, Deliver cars and some parts
9, reply to pm"s etc on here and other websites
10, make hot amazing love to my missus

I do this on my own mate and i am not asking for a pat on the back i am just saying that i am not perfect but as a lot of people will tell you i am always willing to help on the phone with any questions or give advise for nothing , but i dont expect people to ask me to call them back if they cant be bothered to call me first

i'm sorry but i completely disagree. he could be trying to be helpful!

if i'm trying to get hold of someone who's rather busy and the matter isn't urgent, then giving them your number and them calling you emans that they can speak to you at their convenience. That way they dont have to ring if theyre busy.,and if they get 10mins spare they can call me. I can see your point about phonebills, but i dont really ever consider things like that.

ps your phone's ringing, its me on the other end

Paul,

I run a business very similar to yours, and even thought you are not desperate for a sale , as i said a sale is a sale, we all want more business in business, personally i would have called him back.

Oh and your not on the same scale as tesco at all, hence why people wouldnt mail them

I think Tony Mannock used to get probs with people phoning up for free advice so he started using a higher rate sales line to make back the costs, but I might be wrong there.

If you are doing good business then I can understand why you couldn't compromise your cashflow by spending your time chasing after customers. And if that helps keep your prices down for the other customers then I see nothing wrong with it.

But what if someone else started up doing the same as you and took time to chase customers, respond to emails. Then just ups their costs slightly. They will take customers like this away from you. But then you don't want customers like this because you are doing good business as you are.

It suprises me that you're so shocked though. I run a marketing communications agency which specialised in the engineering sector, a lot of our clients have to bend over backwards to stay competative. Customers these days do expect to be able to send a request to be called back, after all it's a sales lead and beleive me each one is treasured.

There are a lot of customers these days in offices with internet access who are used to emailing businesses like yours and expecting a reply back. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, I am find it odd you are so suprised. You can ask send a request for information to any of the large supermarket brands now and they will call you back. Almost all larger companies do this.

Jim
You are missing the whole point mate

HE DIDNT CALL ME , he e/mailed me , asking me to call him back THATS THE POINT
if he had left a message on my phone i would think nothing of calling him back BUT HE DIDNT CALL ME ,,, he,,,, MAILED ME

My main point is ,, if he didnt weant to call because of the cost why did he expect me to call him back because if he cant afford the call he cant afford the parts can he ??? and why else did he e/mail me asking me to call him back , if he wanted me to mail him back no probs but he asked for me to call him

Paul

You have hit the nail on the head

I work alone , you mention BIG companies etc i am not a big company with people answering th phones etc , i have to do it all myself ,

Also you say about chasing a sale ,, for what sort of money tho and maybee a contract yes , but not for a single small sale , i just dont have the time .

I spend far too much time on the phone as is , thats why i work late and every sat and sun ,

mwf the remium rate line was a technical support service to help people ,alot that
called said that they wouldn't ring a company expecting advice for free if they had no intention of buying anything. It also freed up the main phone lines as people would be quick on the phone rather than waffle using their work phones or free air time.Prio to this it was not possible to get hold of me i would be answering phones all day and not get any thing done.I had installed 8 lines to try to solve the issues of engaged phones but this just increased the calls .The premium rate line was the solution. Nothing worse that ringing a company and getting the engaged tone all day

Tony I hope you don't think I was complaining about your phone charges or how you do business, I was just trying to give an example of how some customers don't realise how much it cost companies to sit there educated them to every technical detail. I've seen for myself just how often you have to sit on the phone going over the same stuff over and over again.

Paul I am glad you see where I am coming from

Mate I know you are busy man as I have been on the forums a while and have seen your previous posts. I am not launching into a defamatary post about you as you reply regularly on here to posts.

If a breaker advertises an email address, it is extremely useful for me being in IT and down here, I dont get many opportunities to call and only speak to my parents early on a weekend morning. Not many breakers advertise email addresses and the fact that you do mate, you should utilise it to the maximum (without returning demanding calls from people asking you to call them).

Not a dig mate, just trying to help

I think the problem Paul has, and he's mentioned it before, and it's something all people in his bueiness are stuggling with. Is that there are a lot of these "bedroom breakers" popping up on the net. These are either students or people working full time buying up the odd car, selling the bits on ebay and calling themselves breakers. They aren't a registered company, it's all being done as a hobby which makes some extra cash so they don't have the overheads and concerns of a proper business. They can afford to reply to emails all day from work or uni.
