Default s1 RS Turbo good deal?

Hi guys!

Just wanted a bit of help. I've been a ford man all my life after trying the French (Clio 1.8 16v) but have come back to the trusty blue oval. My everyday cars an escort Td in red in immaculate condition but i fancy a little something for the weekend. I would like a cosworth but my £ won't strech that far so I've decided on an Escort RS Turbo. Ive been offered an S1 1986 custom model. Its had a bigger turbo fitted and is apperently (having not seen the car) in general good all round condition with 94K on the clock and lots of history and MOTs. Bad points are: the front scuttle panels a bit rusty as is the bottom of the passenger door and a few small scratches in the dash. A friend of a friend is selling the car and its quite a way from where i live. It also has no MOT or tax. It was bought as a restoration project but the guys run out of time and money so is selling it.

Basically what im asking if if u guys think it worth the asking price? I've read that S1 RST go for between £1500 all the way up to £7000 if an original minter so i thought its a reasonable price. Also does anyone like to hazard a guess at how much it would be worth with all the problems sorted and a full ticket on it?!

Thanks for all your help and ill keep u posted

You don't metion what he wants for it so can't really say if it is a good price.

I have listed some bits below but i would suggest you have a goo look over the resto section at all the S1 resto's, it will give you a huge amount of info for where rot gets and will amaze you how what seems like a very tidy S1 on the surface is a rotten shit underneath. Get browsing.

Thing with an S1 is that rust is a big headache. Remeber that if the scuttle panel is rusty, then the bulk head may also be going, the screen will cost a bit to remove and it is a bit of a pain to sort.

Door aint so bad, my advice is to properly check the whole car for rust, and i mean properly. Get the carpets pulled back in the foot wells, check the inner and outer wings, check the slam panel and where it joins the wings, Battery tray, the rear valance on the joins, the boot floor. in the sunroof resses and the roof. Get on your hands and knees and have a good poke around underneath. Check the sills.

Also the trim can be expensive and difficult to replace so how good is it?? this also goes for electrics, door locking, windows, switches etc.

Engine wise, if it pulls wel with no knocking or smoking and if it is oil leak free and starts well from hot and cold then your doing ok, gears should go in easily, look for wineing or crunches as this will be rebuild time.

See if the brakes are upgraded as they weren't much cop, also see if it has upgraded suspension as the original would be tired by now.

Check how good the history is, make sure it all fits. just a stamped book and no bills aint much good.

does it have a cat 1 alarm, you'll need one.

Top motor though, you'll love it. Engines and boxes can be sorted, but rot can cost insane amounts, don't fall in love on the viewing and think oh that'll be ok, a battery tray done well could see off 200 quid and inner wings can be a huge huge job. floor pans go aswell so really really check for rot, oh and make sure it isn't a ringer.

So, how much does he want, some in the for sale section at the mo should give you an idea of what they cost

Matt

i really dont mean to hijack the thread but i have a simialr question.

I have an S2 so i'm not a newbie in terms of RS's but i went to look at a S1 for a mate and i'm not sure whether it's worth buying.

In terms of engine and components its top value has stage 2 big valve head, stage 2 turbo, mahle oversized pistons, piper cam, ahmed bayjoo chip n mapping, uprated i/c etc...208hp @ wheels

also has magnex full exhaust, koni s&s all round, 15" diamond cut RS7's

bad points however...interior a bit tatty wiv few rips on seat bolsters, and rust has slightly taken hold with spots on the wings but mainly on the tailgate. this considered its gona need a full respray to be mint.

Is this car worth buying for £2000 in your opinions
