Does big torque always equal big acceleration?

because it dont matter if they only rev to 3 rpm!!!they go REALLY well to 3rpm then next gear woosh 3rpm,next gear 6mph!!!etc etc!

Not necessarily, you could have an engine that produces massive torque but if you haven't got decent transmission or suspension then you just arn't going to get off the line.

Rally cars have the best of everything are are rebuilt after every couple of stages

It's more to do with the flatness / area under the torque curve than the peak figure! Diesels have a high peak torque but they aren't very fast in comparison as the powerband is very small and the torque tails off very quickly!

think delivery and powerband dervs have no rpm, my vectra tdi pulls like fook from 2-3k but thats it next cog whereas my cossie pulls like fook from 3-7k torque does tail but hp is still rising

Torque makes acceletation, horse power makes speed.

Well thats how I understand it.

Std non turbo Rolls Royce makes 180hp, but can them buggers get up and move!

Acceleration is down to POWER to WEIGHT ratio.
Top speed is down to POWER to CD and FRONTAL AREA.

gearing has plenty to do with it, diesels are geared very high because they rev lower normally, its gearing and HP and torque and frontal area and transmission losses and weight etc etc etc.
