Default Just bought XR2i track car - Engine questions

Just bought a cheap XR2i track car for the trackdays at Knockhill (and anywhere else I can be bothered to drag the thing)

Needs a good clean up, nothing major, just bits and pieces
Has a standard-ish XR2i engine in it at the moment, exhaust, lowered springs, not sure about the rest of the suspension yet, interior stripped out, bucket seats and harnesses, full cage, 2 sets of pepperpot wheels (1 set of tyres look brand new ),

Bearing in mind this is supposed to be cheap fun (car cost £350 complete) I will probably be looking to put another engine in. Question is, which?

Or would I be better sticking a cam and a set of 40's on it? Is this worth doing on a CVH?

Cheers for any help.

Now I just need to buy a cheap trailer

Yeah, that's what I thought although I did think about a MK5 RS2000 engine (150bhp standard) as they seem to be cheap these days and pretty reliable as well
Not sure about putting 1 in a Fiesta though

Bal, I had the advantage, it was a mate of mine that was selling it so I had already seen it. Plus it was about 2 miles away

nd why would a stdish ERST engne be so bad on the track then Jenson Button?

reliability, servicing costs, cost to purchase

or a modeo engine which almost drops straight in and is 200 qiud to replace

turbo cars on track aint the best as its about power bands i always thought, why do most fun track cars dont have turbo engines i belive

not even jenson buttons but thats not for that reason

just once agree that this time i made sence

steve if what you said before wasnt bollox i would write a big reply
talking about owning cars and never driving em and readong about em and commenting on em

but to be honest thats just sad and as pathetic as you are

you are saying that you can not EVER recomend any other car except for cars you have driven on a regular basis

back on a NA motor, the power band is more predictable and ya know what ya getting, not a balance of all or nothing

then we talk about the reliability issues when there driven hard and at high temps

basicly a erst engine on the track will be more to repair, so for a 300 quisd cheep fun car i dont think its a good option

now as i own both a cossie and a N/A cabrio and am about to do a 2.0 conversion for this very reason i feel its a fair comment

but judging by your have driven a mondeo longer than the skyline then i feel you are more qualified to me the judgement

Been sorting out the loose ends today.
The tyres on the spare rims are Avon CR500.
Anyone know what these are like?. They look like some kind of track tyre

Do Cossie 4x4 calipers and discs fit an XR2i? (obviously with bigger wheels)

Deffo go for a 2.0l zetec for it. Decent power in a fester and nice n cheap. Far to many things to worry about and buy on a turbo'd track car as I'm findin out.

Go for the mondeo 2.0, my brother had one in his 3i and was quicker than a lot of ERSTs

Was in Performance Ford, standard lump 0-60 in 7.69 and 0-100 in 20.95secs.

This was with a full trim, road going car

Would be well quick and reliable in a stripped out festa.

I'd go for a zetec lump

cheap from scrappy, easyish to fit as said and if it goes bang its easy to replace

OK, what's involved in fitting a 2.0 Zetec engine?
Mechanicals are no problem, what about the electrics? Presume I need the ECU, engine loom etc?

What Rad said really mate, sums it up! lol

You don't want to fook around with the L4 (RS2000) engine, that would be much more hassle!

Zetec's are nice strong engines!

No point beatng round the bush

DONT go for the RS2k lump, Not easily tunable , big heavy engines aswell, zetecs a more easy block to fit/get hold of...

couldn't agree more, I spent a grand on the engine (40's etc)my old XR2 Rallycar and only got 121 bhp, drop a mondeo lump in, or even an 1800 Zetec as they're a bit lighter and rev better.

so does this mean i can comment again or does it mean that steve tells the truth as hes got a skyline

ya need the engine, loom, need to play with a zorst to make it fit, not hard and also mod the mount

then its done, ive seriously looked into this, so far all i have bought are the badges , i feel like mad mac

also philM is the one to speak to on this conversion as hes the daddy, but today he chooses to not comment, the flooker

i think ya use rs2000 discs, dont quote me though

or what about the money ya save from taking steves advice with buying a turbo engine and the constant need for fooked parts ya buy a st170 300 mil conversion or brembos from brom

sorry but for once the passionford crew are agreeing with me cause i do make sence at times

enjoy and have fun

2.0 zetec or a 1800 with 2.0 cams, throttle body and MAF sensor.

Remove the EGR system on it too.

Remember though post 94 2.0 ECU's come with PATS.

Your best bet is to get a XR2i 16v loom and a early RS1800 ECU (1992/93 ish). I had mine chipped too!

Good idea

I've got a spare set of Cossie 3dr wheels and tyres - wonder if they will fit it?
Would like to fit better brakes

I soo wanted to write that But in fairness, too many people on here talk about cars they've never even seen, much less been a passenger in or driven. Its the old syndrome of trying to big yourself up with your knowledge, but sadly theres not a whole lot of it about

And not sure why everyone slags the I4 engine (its not a L4 you fools ) IIRC Stu@MSD will say its actually pretty sound. Does nobody remember Ford used to Rally this engine in F2 280bhp guise.

EDIT

And another thing. Is the car at the top of the page an old Challenge Car? You might find the engines pretty good already. AFAIK its a fairly limited formula so people optimise 100% what they can to get every little extra 10th.
