Call me thick here - but whenever you get bad fuel economy in a vehicle people always say 'change the air filter'.
I would of thought that if your air filter was dirty it would affect performance for sure due to less air getting to the engine but really that should positively affect fuel economy - i.e. it should increase because you arent using as much fuel.
Can someone please enlighten me pls???

Depends on the car mate.
If its only using a TPS and a RPM pulse, like on some N/A cars then the air filter being blocked will badly effect economy as it will run too rich.
On a cossie though with its MAP sensor, or many other cars that rely laregly on AMM then it wont have much effect if any on economy
