Default RS 2000 I4

Has anyone tuned one of these? Just trying to get some info on what does and doesn't work. Planning to build one up over the next year or so incorporating-

Throttle bodies
Emerald management
Up rated conrods and conrod bolts
Possibly high comp pistons
Headwork and cams
Lighten and balance where appropriate

Fancy doing something a bit different after owning a series 2 and at the same time show that the RS 2000 really is a real RS

MSD done a turboed version which was close to 300 horses.

285 cams availible on exchange or outright purchase. about Ł200

Would you not look at turboing it as even on standard compresion you would see 220bhp, you would have to run low boost but could be done.

How big is the budget

a guy on here called
RS23004x4 had a good one mate.

the way people seem to be getting more power is pretty much the spec
you have said, but with the Galaxy bottom end (2.3 litre)
think his made about 230 (with 2.3 bottom end)

Don't want to turbo it mate, after the RS turbo i want something with more progressive power delivery especially as its FWD. Montune had these lumps at nearly 300bhp NA - obviously i'm not aiming for this, but with all the stuff i quoted above i'd like to be at least near the 220bhp mark.

As for budget, well its not massive, thats why i'm taking my time building the engine up (i have a spare engine by the way)

I am looking at building a very complete road car, I've aready got spax coilovers in it and i've sussed out the breaks AP 4 295mm pots (Actually the gravel spec RS 2K rally car breaks)

It does not have to be a torque steering bastard though.

I have a 2.0 8V (twinky) turbo technics pulling just over 200bhp and 225ft Ilb, it is not big power however it is nice easy driving with a bit of tug when you need it, it runs standard compression and hits 10psi (which is full boost) at 2100rpm and then pulls upto 6600 smoothly, no big kick in the arse just a nice pull all the way up.

If not go for the played with NA.

Upto you whatever you choose enjoy

you should still see a fair amount of power from it though mate.
guy called Rallyslag on FEOC-uk built one, again to much the same
spec as you are talking, and i think it made about 190

the thing i think they found was.
the engine is mounted like all front wheel drive cars,
but the inlet is at the back of the engine,
this means that the trumpet length/manifold length
on the throttle bodies ( crutial to getting the power i believe?)
is compromised, as the bulkhead/heater blower etc get in the way.

Any pics of you saph? I didn't know turbo technics did a conversion for them.

Looks mint!

I'm sure you surprise a lot of people in her

There was one that was putting out just over 200bhp with throttle bodies and managment, but without as much work done to the bottom end.

Other thing is I do actually have the option of buying a genuine Montune lump as well, but i don't think it would be suitable for road use - think they need rebuilt after so many hours use

If you tune the 2 litre it will cost you more and be less driveable than the 2.3 for the same horsepower. It's your choice mate but the 2.3 is LOADS better han the 2 litre from my experience.

What about a Focus ST170 engine ? will that fit in a RS2k ?

It's 170bhp before you start, high reving, steel rods, VVTI, 4 branch manifold, duel stage inlet or go for throttle bodies. Then all you would need is management & mapping and without the cat you could see between 190-200bhp.

Don't want to change the engine either. It basically an exercise to prove what can be done to one of these engines without a turbo or capacity increase. Don't get me wrong the ST engine is great, but again its around Ł3K for one, and that 3K would build me an I4 that is far stronger.

Rebuilding the bottom end is never a bad idea, especially when you're going to be taking it to some really high revs.

My mate Neil (rs20004x4 on rs2000-16v.com) has his RS2000 running 170bhp and about 149lb.ft torque at the moment. The limiting factor is that he's just running superchipped standard management on it. The only work that's been done to the engine is a K&N panel replacement filter (not cone!), standard engine internals, EGR removed (including grinding open the exhaust ports on the head), Mongoose exhaust with de-cat pipe and Optimax.

The graph was pulling all the way to the redline - if he had the bottom end rebuilt and some lairy cams installed as well as full mapping on aftermarket management (with appropriately specced injectors) I reckon you'll see over the 200bhp mark easily.

The 2.3 option would give you bags more torque - but it sounds like you want high revving antics instead

Cheers,

Andy
