4x4 drivetrain vibration
Got an 'orrible vibration from the drivetrain on my 4be. (G plate XR 4x4). It's low mileage (<80k) and full ford service history to 75k.
Lots of play in centre propshaft bearing. replaced that. still lots of vibration, under power, esp when torque called for. And when I say lots, I mean LOTS! full throttle at 2.5k rpm gets the whole car shaking and rattling likie nothing I've ever known.
SLIGHT play in offside front inner driveshaft joint. So I guess that's the next thing to handle. Mate in the trade says I've gotta buy a whole driveshaft for £100 plus.
Two questions: Any cheaper way of handling the parts piece?
Any other ideas what might be going on?
Thanks,
Al.

M8,
1st thing you want to do is check the front prop for any signs of wear. Have a look at the link ive put up. The XR and the cossie share the same idea so its worth checking

Definately recommend looking at the front prop as suggested by rstoughy. I have had terrible vibration for the last 1000 miles or so and in the last week have also been getting a knocking sound which sounded like exhaust banging against something.
Today i jacked the car up to investigate the exhaust problem and noticed the the joint on the front prop is absolutley fooked!
I'll get that replaced soon and hopefully it'll fix the vibration issue.
Good luck mate.

Vibration's almost all gone now, after replacing the front off side driveshaft. I haven't been under the car myself (broke my leg white water rafting......
) but the guy I trust (a sometimes works rally mechanic...) says there's nothing else loose in the drivetrain.
However, I still get some vibration that I'm sure isn't supposed to be there. Characterised by an 'orrible noise from the gear knob at around 4.5k rpm, and an ever present .....vibration. Without driving someone else's 4be, I've got no real way of telling. May well be my MT75's on it's way out
. OK for now, but now I'm sorting the handling out so nicely I'm sorely tempted to slot in a cossie 24v...... Still, time for that for a few months. I still have to do lots of work to my other car (Mk1 Golf much altered) to get it on the road before I can think of taking the 4be off. And I want some non warping non fading brakes if I'm going to add another 70 or so horses......
Thanks for your help, guys, for sure I'll watch that front propshaft!!

i'll get some when i get home
i've got a few knocking baout but if the joint is gone and it's making a racket it someones will wear out the shaft where it's been knocking up against it
eays enough to swap the joints but you need to know what shaft you have as they come in 2 different sizes, you have the solid one and then you have the hollow one, the soilid ones use the smaller joints (you can get your finger and thumb around teh shaft) and the thicker ones use the bigger joints (you can grab it with your whole hand as it's about the thick end of a basball bat)
of the top of my head they are 155 and 160's, but what that means i have no idea
