Default Escos - dashboard strange behaviour

I just returned home from a small ride and I had strange situation one moment. I had really hard braking to a corner and after that all th ilumination of the tacho, speedometer and other things - like boost, voltage and oil pressure just dissapeared with an exception of small spot of light in the middle of the speedo. After stoping and switching ights on and of a few times and moving the brightness regulator everything came back to normal. What was that???

So, how can I prevent this from happening in future? Everything is working great and I am told my clocks look much better then on most Escos, apart from that incident. Schould I worry?

The voltage reg is soldered on the back of the pack and then zip tied. Mine have gone and took a look the other day. Doesn't look that hard if you're handy with a soldering iron.

TurboSystems fixed mine. But its old board out and new board back in and thats it - Good luck! The problem will get worse if u leave it and driving at night with no illumination is not very useful.

No problem at all... It's really making me mad sometimes that I can't do things as easily as you. But I can drive much faster

Anyway, you all tell me that I am going to have to change the voltage regulator, am I right? Cleaning or anything like that wont help.

I had the same problem with my large turbo escort, you need to remove your main clocks containing the speedo etc.. Then open it up, you will see a small quite narrow electrical board, this is what is causing your problem, remove this (very carefully) get the numbers off it and Ford should get you one in a day or so for about Ł60 quid, also the small amount of light you are getting is from two regular bulbs put there incase the board fails.

I think only one bulb works - will change it.

I'm thinking about cleaning it because the problem apeared after a giant flood I had in my Cossie when one of the waterpipes from sunroof came loose - all the water flooded through electric things on the left side of the car (LHD). Maybe something just became dirty. Must check it, and probably buy the thing eventually.

On the Mk 5 & 6 escorts it is VERY common to find water making it's way down the A-pillar onto the tracks in the fuse box, and the soldering looks like it has been done by a trained monkey anyway!. This could cause a whole lot of very funny faults. My friends Escort had the washer jets come on for no reason, stutter at 4k RPM, Sudden stalling of the engine - then it fired up again?!?!? Window switches controling the wrong windows, e.t.c, e.t.c So if the voltage regulator doesn't fix it, that would be my next bet.

Hope you get it sorted

how easy is it to replace the fuse box?

any soldering to be done?

or is it simply unplug , unclip and fit new one?

I have the same, but I suppose it may be a problem with the pump itself. It schould pump only one way at the time and it doesn't.

Piece of piss Dave, You will DEFO be able ot do it I reckon, just bolting no soldering, I was very suprised mate, took me about ten minutes, the 4th time round lol (ford gave me the wrong ones first)

Micro cat listed the wrong ones for my car... mine was near 200 quid, but the ones which were wrong were alot cheaper and will prob be ok for yours

Just be sure to get one with the same 3 letter code next to the big long 94ABblah blah number

the 3 digits will be, abb BBA BAB BCA, something along those lines mate, Dont mind bolting it up for ya if not sure, just make sure battery disconnected

Paul, I reckon your switch assy is at fault, about 60 quid IIRC from Ford, IIRC, there are 2 pumps on the washer bottle, one for front one for rear so dont think it will be that....
