I had the same problem with my large turbo escort, you need to remove your main clocks containing the speedo etc.. Then open it up, you will see a small quite narrow electrical board, this is what is causing your problem, remove this (very carefully) get the numbers off it and Ford should get you one in a day or so for about £60 quid, also the small amount of light you are getting is from two regular bulbs put there incase the board fails.
