Default Help! Car eletric trouble shooting advice needed!

I have a problem with the XR2 and need some trouble shooting advice to sort it.

I lost all my electrics at the same time, no lights, no rad fan, no wipers, fuel guage, absouletly everything with exception to a glowing battery light.

Battery is as flat as a dodo.

Have checked all the connections, but nothing.

How can I test the alternator to see if thats the thing not working?

Anything else I can check?

You can test the alternator with a voltmeter.

Recharge your battery and run the engine at about 2k revs.

Measure the voltage on the battery should be around 13.8V

switch on de-mister, lights, heater blower and voltage shouldn't change much.

However, for it all to go at the same time is a bit odd.

As long as it has a scale of above 15V DC, it will be fine.

You'd need to get the alternator running to check its output.

As above re charge the battery start the car and simply meter the volts coming out of it.

13.8 should be a reasonable amount.

i know it sounds silly but if the batt light stayed on before the car went dead ya have cheacked the belt is still on the car

as when they snap or the alt gets fried ( as in jumpstart with leads on back to front) thew bat light stays on

also did the rev counte start dancing with the music to as thats another sign

if the alt aint charging enough it will appear very very dim when all the stereo, lights, heater is on then finally ya loose the lot, the car will start again after 5 mins though then go dead again

Well everything died by the time I got to work with the exception of the batterly light.

got in it, to go home fine, untill I lost everything.

Luckly an XR2 being an XR2 it dont need electrics to keep going.

So everything goes with expection to the battery light.

I'm just charging the bat up and the spair now....

cheack the alt belt and also the wire that connects the alt to the starter, not the blu wire as thats deffo working as its the red light on the dash ya can see, also means theres a live feed to the started and negative going though the engine too as otherwise the alt wont light up

id say its the alt belt or the alt its self

this is what I am thinking.

Its definately putting out some charge thats for sure (had the fan on at one point)

It runs enough to spark and keep the car running, but not enough to run anything else.

also check the wiring that runs across the front cross member - this ages and can get a bit dodgy with time.

are your lights etc dim or none existant?

stu thats the batt, when my alt was fooked it cut everything and i never even had hazzard lights, i called the AA and when they came out the fooker started on the button ect, its the same as when ya digicamera batts are dead, ya take apic and turn the camera off and ya get a few more piccys out of it till its totally dead, remember the bats aint designed to be ran flat, they store a charge, if yan run em totally dead they ya fook em, its totally different to a mobile phone bat, there the same idea as a walkie talkie batt

cheack that fooking belt as if it was charging the bat light would be dull, if it was on bright it means its not charging

oh and thought of another thing ive had !!!!!, iuf when ya turn the car off the batt light stays on the alt is fooked and its thing that turns it off to save the charge aint working and if runninng the batt flat instead, not sure what its called but the very first time my alt died that was the reason
