Push them out of the top only!
If you pull them out of the bottom, then the rings expand and you crant then get them past the main bearing casts........unless you break all the rings off etc.

hey this was a convo i had at 3am this morning
i as saying that they only go in the top as there fluted and ya cant fit em in the bottom
as for more dangerous
, ive never built a engine,
so whats that got to do with ima
i test things and in all honesty i do enough research to know if it will or wont work
ive drilled a CPS, fist time ive ever drilled into cast iron adn the first time ive actually used a centre punch and the fooker works spot on
ive also converted a mfo head to efi wioth non addaptor plate and after a few teething troubles ive sorted that too
not bad from a self tought person
infact i had fletch show me how to take a engine out ONCE and ive done a few since then, also managed to semi spec a engine with advice and fellow members help as well that we will see if that works for a small budget
so as for where that comes from i dont know
also i have never blown a engine up since i was 20 and all work ive done on me car has be hassle free ( except a few bolts beiing a coooont and cowboi having to take em out as hes good at that )
so yet again cheers for the shitty comments for no reason
btw i also managed to think fo a brake idea and get brom to make em and they seem to be fine , john aint hit any cones in his car yet
and didnt your old engine you built drop a valve
, does that mean your engine built was shite
, or is that a teething issues that ya resolved

It doesn't have anything to do with bores being 'fluted'(not actually sure what you mean there). The bore are in fact tapered, however the taper runs from bottom to top i.e larger at the bottom than they are at the top.....so they would actually go in easier from the bottom (if the main bearing castings were not in the way)
HTH
Pugo
A complex subject,of course a piston will come out either way,it would be the block that stops its tracks as the kind Sir foreigneRS said earlier on.Best to really avoid all known hassle by extracting from the top.
Cheers.

That was me driving like a tit on the limiter (even though they told me to keep away from it lol) that did that and Karl did the head not me lol
Yes things are now changed but it dont mean i wont do another
And they come out the top as the bore aint finished at the bottom

My head luckily only bent one valve, and even the rad survived the battering of the rod and bits of block thrown at it
