Default major oil leak coming form under tray beneath g-box

Just gone and bought my very first series 2 escort rs turbo

Its been brilliant and been having some great fun. However went out side this morning to find a massive patch of what looks like gearbox oil.

After further inspection it has filled the under tray beneath the gear box with oil and is just dripping out the water holes.

I can not see any leaks from the top of the box and by the looks of things I dont think the drive shaft seals have gone.

Cant seem to get the under tray off eaither as 2 of the studs just turn and cant get another spanner on the other side

Please help

Dave

Do you mean there is Oil dripping from the cradel for the gearbox? There should be 2 engine mounts attached to this.
If it's the thing im thinking of(which it prob is going by your explanation)i will most probably be gearbox Oil,smell it and see-It should stink of cat piss if it is

It's either(as you say)A seal or the driveshaft has popped out a wee bit

Is it still dripping out?

it does sound like driveshaft seal, its abit of an ass of a job but cheap to fix

just dont run your gearbox out of oil

What you recon to do then just see if I can go knock it back in

Having said that I went down a big pot hole the other night could this have caused this.

Just been outside to have another look.

Drive shafts im sure are not leaking as I can see them.

Ive just gone and topped the box up up and yes I have lost alot.

Could the box be to full???? I top it up by taking the black allan key plug out at the front of the box just below the clutch arm and fill it up untill it comes out of the same plug.

I wish I could take that tray off but the 2 studs closer to the rear just will not undoo as all thet happens is the studs go round and round and dont get loose

Im really stuck now

Yeah thats how you fill it up,ideally you want the Oil to be about 4mm beneath the hole but dont worry about it,i just fill it up untill it comes back out They take 3.2ltrs by the way
I dont know where else it could be leaking from.Knocking the shafts out by going over a pot hole is unlikley but still a possibility..You can tap these back in but it may be the split pin's at the end are worn and need replaced. They hold the shafts in.Think they cost 18p from Ford as i had to get some the other week because my driveshafts kept popping out

Oh and if you do manage to take the cradle/tray off be carefull as it's got 2 of 3 engine mounts on it and if the engine isnt supported when you remove it the top mount will get ripped so be carefull mate

the only other places are the gear selector shaf and input shaft(in the gearbox bellhousing) but unlikely

possible try, pressure washing the gearbox, filling it up and then running it round, then jack the car up and have a good to see where its coming from, because its all guess work at the min

please let us know mate

Ive got the same problem. But i know its my shafts. The pins are worn. Not a major leak though. Im saying its your drive shafts. Cant really think what else it would be for the amount of oil to be lost. That cradle is the gearbox/engine mount isnt it??

if its not the gearbox, then looks like a crankseal or sumpgasket, my crankseal failed and the oil was pissing out of the drainhole on the tray
