Default Help and advice please.........

Hi all,
I'm a new member the cossie family and would like some help and knowlage regarding my new pride and joy from you experts. :hehe:
The car has been standing for over 2 months in a lock up before i rescued it.
I know owning a cossie ain't cheap so i accept that buty i do want to have a sweet running performance car to kick some ass. As you do

1). When starting the car from cold its seems to struggle and cut out, I have to re-start and give it a few revs to perk it up, Once the car gets warm the revs pick up and stay under 1000rpm, Any ideas what could be causeing this

2). When on a steady idle the engine sounds sweet with no rattles etc, When i rev it gently a tapping noise appears from the tappets, Quite loud. The oil in the engine is like dirty water that's the best way of explaining it. Obviously an oil/filter change is needed. What oil would you guys/gals recommend to be the best for a cossie.

3).I've noticed when driving at 20-25 mph, around 1000-1200revs the turbo
is kicking in. When i put me foot down the turbo kicks in and the car will shift for a second or too, (Not as fast as i expected for a cossie) the all you hear is air being sucked in from somewhere and all the boost seems to disapper, I don't know if the actuator could be weak or not a si don't want to spend loads if it's something simple, But knowing my luck, It ain't.
I disconnected th dump valve as it seemed to be letting in too much air and not closing properly and i ended up overboosting hitting over 30psi!!!! Since i disconnected the dump valve i'm doing around 13-14psi.

It gets better!!

4). I looked in the headed tank as you do to see if it needed toppin up (baily tank, couldn't see) Inside i found a frothy brown liquid, God knows what this is, Has any one else had this? Anyway i am going to flush it all out and put fresh fluid in. If that the best thing to do.

Sorry to waffle on but i want me car to be running at its best. Any help would be fantastic.

hi steve. i hope for your sake that you haven't bought a shitter. it can be very costly and disheartening to have lots of problems with a cossie.

1) could be Idle Speed Control Valve stuck. that's the electrical valve connected with a grey connector on the throttle body. take it out and clean it up and lube it up with wibbly dibbly. connect 12v to it and check that it opens. this valve should get a PWM supply when the engine is cold to allow more air to bypass the throttle plate and raise the idle speed.

2) are you sure it's coming from the tappets and not main bearings? what oil pressure do you have? i use castrol rs full synthetic 10 60 in mine with no problems. others use mobil 1, and others use silkolene.

3) you don't normally hear the turbo, or certainly feel it, until over 2500 rpm at best. dump valve should be removed and all pipes blocked until you find the cause of your problems, as they are often leaky. what chip does it have in, and what boost is it mapped for. very difficult to diagnose remotely.

4) sounds like the previous owner was a tight bastard and didn't put antifreeze in. the block and turbo core corrode really easily without it turning the water brown. the core plugs are most probably corroded fron inside and could be very thin and weak. if this is the case, you could try fresh anti freeze and water mix, but keep an eye on your level and look out for leaks regularly.

good luck

Cheers for that Nick,

I hope it ain't a shitter either

The car had been standing for just over 2 months, It's had loads done, Top end rebuild, Bottom end rebuild with new lightend and balanced pistons, Green injectors, 3 bar map sensor, K&N filter, And a Massibe turbo, He said it was the T34, Looks to me like a Hybrid it's that big.

No the tapping id from the tappets, I put that down to having shitty oil in the engine, But could be wrong. I need to get a gauge or take it somewhere to have the oil presure checked.

Again i thought the turbo kicked in after 2.5k revs, but like i said you drive along and the boost gauge is registering 5psi+ and thats at 30MPH!! Some crazy shite going on.

Apart from that the car is in really good condition no rust or rot.

I'm gonna do the oil and replace the manky fluid and see what happens then, Also give the ISCV a clean up.

I would suggest taking it to a tuner and drive it there slowly otherwise things could get very expensive
