If it really wasn't there, XP wouldn't work at all.

system32 directory is not hidden by default mate, so you should see it when entering your windows directory, yes. HTH.

the whole contents of c:\windows is hidden by default using explorer (same as c:\program files). theres a button to click in the right hand pane to enable viewing

don't confuse things Gra : the content does not show until you click on the button stated above, but the directory attribute is not hidden. so basically if you can see the rest of your windows directory (ie cursors, fonts etc) you should also see the directory system32

cheers peeps, formatted the mofo last night, and everythings now sorted.

I dunno what i had infecting the pc, but regedit would start a CMD prompt etc, i was using Adaware pro, and spysweeper plus norton etc and regardless of what it found on reboot i would be infected again and again, spysweeper was finding 50+ after every reboot

Bill has got his winxp installed in WINNT directory because he upgraded from Windows 2000
When installing Windows XP from scratch, whether it's home or pro, it's always in WINDOWS directory.
