can you copy VHS to a PC?

I want to convert some of Kaceys VHS tapes to DVD, so the first step is to get them on to my PC, is this possible? or am i stuffed until i can be arsed to buy a standalone dvd recorder?

Runs USB2 to your VCR outputs. You get an editing programme on the enclosed disc. Only problem that we know of is that on the highest quality capture. Its VERY VERY heavy on memory.
If anyones got an idea on how to keep quality high and reduce file size lets have it

I use a wintv card (£8 off ebay) with a vcr plugged into it, then i use showshifter (free from a well know p2p software) to record it, then use the same program to encode it to avi afterwards.
I transferred some old VHS tapes using my new DVD recorder, but only after finding out that I needed a special SCART cable to overcome the Macrovision protection on the tapes.
I found it on www.ktvision.com wed and think it cost about £30 including delivery.
