Default Good business management

Theres enough employed and self employed people on here so give us a clue ...

What is it?
What makes a good business and a good business manager?

Me and 1 of my partners have had a falling out and i cant see no middle ground to bargain on, and since this have had my management questioned, i think i am right because i dont like to use the phrase 'in hindsight' because thats not available when you have to make snap decisions

A receptionist who was supposed to start at 1am this morning threw a sickie at 10 to 1, not the first time its happened, so i had to cover reception until 6am when the morning receptionist came in an hour early.
This is the 9th time in 3 weeks this has happened so i made the decision that we get rid of her as she is unreliable. That was the icing on a very thin cake

Recently we lost an account due to being undercut, as i deal with the account work that was deemed as my fault.

It is a taxi company, the drivers are all self employed therefore i cannot undercut to the depths where the drivers suffer as the way i see it they have bills to pay and would only get earache if account work was going out too cheap, Catch 22.

The partner has been in the business alot longer than me, therefore should know more than me, but has also brought in friends and family to work, who in his eyes can do no wrong, something which is at times blatently incorrect.

9 times in 3 weeks is unacceptable, you were right to dismiss her.

9 Times in 3 weeks is more than enough example of poor performance

I would have binned her long ago

that means shes no showing 60% of a 5 day week shocking

This sort of stuff happens all the time doesn't it ? Surely you've won some business at the expense of your competitors. Your partner should know better.

Family and business don't mix, you can't be efficient in both if you mix them up, for someone who has a lot of experience, he should know better.
He's probably giving you an earache about the receptionist because he's never been able to make that sort of decision himself.

Your decision to implement disiplinary against your employee I would say was correct as long as you've covered your ass using the correct protocol....i.e previous verbal warning all recored on paper etc.

As one of 3 in a medium sized business the key to any partnership/board in my experience is to always have a united front to the people who work for you.

No business can survive if there is dissent in the management whether that's 2 or more.

As for the partners they need to be able to talk about any subject..however hard that maybe(family ties/friendships always make this more difficult)...and if no solution is forth coming the only option is for one or more to leave the partnership

Take some very good advice from both your accountant and solicitor and play your cards close to your chest initally and try to hide any emotional attachment you have to the business....

Lastly and again only my opinion dont work somewhere or with people who make you unhappy it will only lead to you becoming de-motivated and stressed....life is too short....

Hope this helps

Regards

Ian
