althought it's better, it's still not 100% right. It cut out on me in heavy motorway traffic this morning and it also started bunnyhopping like it was struggling to go one time when I tried to change lanes.
I guess this must mean a new ISCV for the car? Can't believe there's more money to be spent on the bloody thing......
How much will it set me back from Ford and do you get both parts?

you DONT want to be buying one from Fords over £200 from them
but as above between £70-£90 from Burtons,Pj etc!

Want it done by tomorrow..... meant to be going on a trip at the weekend. Drove it to work today, it wasn't terrible but I don't wanna be worried while I'm driving.
Martyn, how do I turn up the idle speed?
And just to confirm I took off the right part(!!), it was in two parts, one end with an electrical plug in it, cylindrical shape, and the other part had 3 holes on the back.... that was right, wasn't it?

Paul, I'm at work all day every day so no chance of going
however feel free to go on my behalf! I could always come and collect it from you after work.
I know you're way too much of a lazy shit to do that for me tho

Martyn, I'd like to try turning up the idle speed.... how do I do it and how much should I do it?

unlikely to be an iscv problem. the iscv shouldn't really come into play once the engine is warmed up, unless the engine is loaded. more likely to be a vacuum leak or sensor fault or something.

Oh no.... conflicting reports! That's the last thing I needed..... what would I have to do to sort that out? And how can I confirm what the problem actually is? To be honest tho, the engine seems to be fine once I've been up and running a while and it seems to happen only rarely then.
Does that help?

well the whole point of the iscv is to increase the idle speed when cold for smooth running, or to maintain it when hot and under load at idle (e.g. rad fan on and taking a lot of electrical power, or power steering sapping power). apart from those times, it should not come into play.
what are your symptoms exactly? i may have mis-interpreted your first post, i didn't notice the heavy trafic bit and just saw the motorway bit.
if it is iscv, they can normally just e cleaned up with carb cleaner and lubed up to work again.
as cars get older, the throttle assy gets worn and can cause idle problems. you should set your base idle speed first with the engine hot and all electrical things off and with the iscv disconnected. have you done that? could be a screw that controls a needle valve to bypass the throttle plate, or could be a screw to set the gap around the throttle plate (not familiar with your engine).

Not had my haynes manual arrive yet so I have no idea how to adjust my idle speed..... I've just bought a new iscv on my lunch hour but if I can sort it without that I'll just take it back.
How exactly do you set idle speed on the Zetec, anyone?
My exact symptoms here are that when I start up the car it seems fine in neutral, with or without electrical stuff on, but then as soon as I put it in first or reverse, it drops the revs, spluttering all the way down to cutting out.
If I've got the car out driving and I slow down at a junction it dies sometimes, and like this morning when I was doing a slow 1st and 2nd gear crawl in traffic it cut out. At one point there was a bit of space to move into the next lane and the car just started jerking when I put my foot down to move into it.
When it's warmed up and been running for a good while it doesn't seem to happen much, but it does still happen occaisionally. I cleaned out my iscv last night so if it is that, it's better to just replace it I think.

jerking when trying to accelerate does not indicate an iscv fault to me.

I can't honestly remember if I had my foot on the throttle or not at the time now.... I was giving it a little throttle and then rolling with brake and clutch a lot of the way tho.
When I said it jerked when trying to accellerate I should add that this happens when it's already dying and I put my foot down.

let us know how you get on. have to go now.
no luck with the iscv then? can't say as i'm surprised. i'm not saying it is defintely a leak, but it sounds like one. but it could also be a sensor fault.
to look for an air leak, get some bradex easy start or other volatile spray. spray it around various joints on the inlet side and if you hear the revs rise, then you know that it has been sucked in, improved the combustion and made the engine run better.
aother way is to pressurise the inlet system and search for it, but that's difficult at home.

Nah no luck mate. I'm gutted, I really hoped it would sort it. Where do I get bradex? I might just have to take it into a garage and pay out even more money I can't afford ont he damn thing....
