Default My Granada Mk1 and a terrible restoration job at RO Performance

https://mygranadamk1.blogspot.com/?m=1

This was supposed to be my retirement present to get my Granada properly sorted after nearly 40 years of ownership at the time .Six months after and some bubbling had already started to appear. I worked hard to get the rest of the car done as best as possible so it wouldn't need doing again. Lots of rewiring for example.

Sadly after just over two years the bubbles and blisters on the bodywork have appeared everywhere.

So I've had no choice but to start to repaint it myself. And already I've found fillers and paint over rust. And I've paid 9k just for the paint job! 😡

Getting rid of rust is extremely difficult. I've been through it many times. Although that does sound poor.

Bits of mine started to bubble aout a year or so after I had paint done, but a lot of the prep I did myself, and my garage just isn't as dry as you'd like, especialyl in winter. So although it was "dry", and I did epoxy priper over the repairs....it still just wasn't clean and dry enough in some cases.

And most rust killers....you end up rubbing them off anyway to get smooth enough for primer/paint.

Only true way to deal with rust, is cut it all out, which is a huge task too. All mega expensive labour intensive work. I spent many many hours, and I know some corners were cut. It really is specialist work.

Yes, I understand. And I expected a few bits to poke though here and there but it's every panel!

This was under the gutter rail on the A-pillar. These were removed at the resto shop so should have been nice and clean.

After just 2 years and paying out a lot of money I would be very pissed off to see such problems with my car! There is no excuse for lack of proper preparation before painting! I go to a lot of car shows and have spoken to a lot of people who have had bodywork and paint jobs done far longer than just 2 years ago and they still look superb!! I hope you can get the problems sorted out properly this time.

This was what was under the blisters when I did a quick sand back the other day. I took the photo right away so this is exactly what was under the paint.

This was fitted in the gap between the quarter panel and the inner panel. Good old silicone sealant.

Getting there. Going to do a repair from inside the chassis rail now I have enough metal to hold things together.
The remails of an old repair will be removed or cleaned up as necessary.

I got bummed years ago when my cossie had rear repair arches fitted and a full paint job. A few months later the rear arches started to go scabby. I went back to the Mazda main dealer where the bodyshop was and I showed them. They said they carnt guarantee rust. I said yeh but you have put new repair arches in.

It went to a proper Ford enthusiast in the end and he sorted it. This was is 2014. The paint work still looks well to this day.

There seems to be scammers everywhere 😕

I wouldn't mind but I was paying a daily rate for the welding work.

Luckily the arches on my Sapph are original but many years ago I had to have the same chassis work I am doing on the Mk1 done on my Cossie. It wasn't cheap but nothing has come back or been an issue.

That actually looks quite old ?

There's a lot of foam and cream coloured stuff inside my old Fords in some areas.

The metal is shiny on the back except what bits of rust have come away as I pulled it away.
I've owned the car for 40 years so I know it's not me

Under the scuttle and top of the door hinge panel, after I cut a few layers away to remove rust, there were actually bare metal parts that were in great shape. They had never been painted or treated at all, but were totally sealed up for years and rust free.
The layers near the surface....not so great lol.

Yeah, I found unpainted metal under the scuttle too. I also found out why the passenger footwell was getting wet. 🙂

That's a lot worse than my MK2 was !!

There are so, many layers in there too, I tried to rebuild mine as best I could, with the same layers as original. That looks like a bloody nightmare to deal with

Yep, it was an " oh shit" moment.
I did manage it though. It was solid afterwards and I sealed it to death with seam sealer and hammerite.
it may not look pretty but everything is tied together and sounded right when hit with a hammer. 😀

It isn't pretty, but there really is no way to make that pretty. Still a repair that should last a long time which is all that matters really.

Boot floor and chassis rail all now solid. I'm reasonably pleased with the outcome.

Rear quarter now in epoxy primer.

More crap workmanship uncovered today.
These were my NOS beam bushes that are now no longer available anywhere.
THere were also supposed to powder coat the beam and not give it a cat-lick of Hammerite.

His qualifications for doing any classic car work are not very promising.

So the opportunity he couldn't turn down is working as a receptionist at BMW Bolton. Possibly a bit above his skill level but closer than doing car restoration that's for sure.

I removed the trailing arm bushes that I had supplied and they had fitted in the wrong orientation.
And this is what I have found - they must have used an air saw to cut the bush and gone through to the arm. This will have to be welded.

This was the part owner of RO Performance that did the above work on my car.
I'd stay well away from this Escort. You'd need a paint depth gauge and a magnet would probably fall off.

Jeez, I just stumbled over your post there man, I'm in the trade and I see it from time to time and I can say nothing p****s us off more than dodgy work like that. If you ask me that is as bad as fraud, or theft, an absolute scam! No wonder the business closed doors, probably worried about being sued or getting a visit from trading standards or DVSA!!
Any way good luck to you getting her back on the road out in the sun again, keep chipping away, hope you get it all sorted there fella!!

Sorry to see you had bad experience, I also know the feeling when it comes to poor workmanship, as I found out and always say to others now "price is no guarantee of quality " there are plenty of places that know how to charge but few that are actually decent.

Somehow these reviews were not showing on their Google page. Looks like I'm not the only one to get stiffed, the BMW one was quite polite considering the mess they made.

I paid over 1300 quid for this work on my cossie over 10 years ago. The owner of the bodyshop told me to bring it back the next year ha ha.

I was really lucky with the rear arches on my Cossie especially as it was a work daily driver for so long. Apart from a small bit at the front-lower edges it's all original.

Are yours now sorted?

This plate looks like it was plug welded but only one of the plugs was holding the rest released with a big screwdriver!

And underneath hadn't been treated or fuck all really! New outer sill ordered which will be fitted once I have made sure the middle panel (vent) is solid and painted.
