Default S2 headlight issue

Hi friend of mine has a s2 escort turbo, has a strange issue with the headlights, put the switch on side lights and dipped beam comes on, put the switch to dipped
beam and the side lights come on, everything else works fine just those two functions are the wrong way around on the switch, obviously checked relays and fuses and are all fine, has anyone else had this problem thanks

From ex Auto sparks....now retired...you may not have a fault !!.......back in the early days 80s...into 90s...the law required Head lamps to come on be it half brightness as soon as ignition on engine running and side lights on [ only note ] known as the "Dim-dip system" ...both head lamps come on ...on at half power...all fords.... British leyland....GM vauxhals etc etc had the system as standard...so to re-cap....NO ignition on...switch side lights on...then you see just small side lights on.....now turn ignition on....both head lamps come on , all be it not full brightness...OK...thats correct to your S2 car...then turning the head lights on normal full power ie...main & dip beams full power....the "Dim-dip system" is then by-passed.....if your car is in any way different to above then there is a fault.... hope of help...Peter.

With the side lights on only...no head lamps will be on....But as soon as you turn ignition on.....the the "Dim-dip system comes on...ie not on full power. you say the head lamps are coming on with out the ignition being on....ie working from just turning side lights on....yes...so there is a problem, i can tell you the system is complicated, it runs both head lamps in series....4 filements [ 2 in each head lamp ] are on...so low voltage now, hence there "Dim ".....back in the day best to convert the system back to normal head lamps ....Dim -dip not now required for MOT...i can tell you converting the system results in much better Head lamps .
