Default 4x4: runs, into gear no drive under load

Hi All (1990, RS Sapphire, 4x4)
Strange one -as title says, starts, idles fine, depress clutch, select gear goes on flat ground around the workshop. Mechanic went to drive up tiny slope onto ramp/ hoist and no drive. He had his foot off the clutch, car in gear and it was not moving! No untoward noises etc.
Transfer case/ gearbox/ combo??
Any ideas please?

It was v strange as would drive slowly to approach the ramp then would not go up it whilst in gear and foot completely off the clutch pedal! The car drove perfectly fine to the workshop and sat outside all day before being taken in. Was pretty hot though at 38 all afternoon.

After that, did it still move when it was on the flat floor? Did you try if it would move in second gear?

The front transfer box was removed etc and nothing found untoward! Put back together and now all is fine! Driving as it should - very strange!
