weathers finaly warmed up.
decided to get the series one out to take the kids out. only done A few hundred miles in the last 5 years so i treated her to a head gasket timing belt ect. second trip out and the gearbox let go!
now ive been a mechanic for nearly 30 years but boxes always go to box specalist. impatient and curious i pulled it apart and the what im assuming is the final drive that connects to the crown wheel is shot!
looks like it is the only integral gear on the shaft but lucky it`s not the diff.
i have seen and scoured several posts about ratios and box swapping so i know there are some pretty nerdy folk here lol.
1 can any point me in the direction of some good detailed reading on this box as everything comes up ib5 and t5.
2 anyone have a reliable source for a replacement shaft or alternative that will fit. shes in bits on the ramp and i have so many customers cars todo but it seems pointless to put it back together just to strip it back out.

There are different (LSD) differentials. ?seven or five? bolts. Don't know ift it's Series 1/2 or 1986/7 when Ford modified some minor technical details (push down reverse etc.).
S1 RSTurbo had a 4.27 final drive, the XR3i MFI cars with 105 bhp (usually) had the same final drive. Not sure about the convertibles. Especially on MK3 Escort as those were just labelled as 1.6i. But keep in mind you can NEVER be sure about this. It seems like Ford sometimes just threw parts that were lying on the shelves into their cars. We've seen a lot of funny and unusual things.
And don't forget to give Ford a call...Sometimes they have quite rare things still as NOS. Maybe also somewhere in mainland Europe.
When you're not able to get the spare part you need or a whole S1 gearbox an early MFI box might be worth a try.
thanks for the reply i popped the shaft into my gearbox guy this morning and he confirmed it is the whole output shaft that needs to be replace.
he said that any bc box output shaft with the same number of teeth should be the same it has 15 teeth, well supposed to lol.
i do have 2 s2 boxes but as the crown wheel is different i very much doubt they will be the same. im not very confident in ordering a shaft from a random site, simply because it it lets go and takes the box out completely ill struggle to get another one
i also can get my hands on an rs1800i box for a very good price which has the same mounts without lsd but i need to do more reading
To change the whole box you'll need a MK3 Escort one. The MK3 is the only one with the four bolt mounting on front of the gearbox bellhousing. All the others have a crossmember and a bellhousing without the holes for the bolts.
Internals of MK3 Fiesta and MK3 Escort are mostly the same, IB5 was intruduced with Fiesta MK4.
hmmm im going to pop round my mates tonight to take another look at this box it deffinatley has the non cradle mounts(4 bolt holes in a square on the front of the houseing)
ill bring it home. either way im going to rebuild the s1 box so im going to have to source an output shaft the only thing ive found this far is.
but i`ve never heard of them and if its chocolate and rips the box apart ill be screaming.
so i my next mission is to try to find a part number for the output shaft so i can try to see if that shaft was fitted to anything else.
think ill pop in my local ford trade
yep thats impressive mate i popped into ford
interesting thing is its listing states b5/ib5 so ive got a few hours ahead of my tonight when im finished with work
1639135 your data seems to sugest that that output shaft if fitted to all 1.6 cvh escort/orions upto 92. only one way to find out
i think i may have found a solution for me.
i found this table showing ratios
if these figure are correct.
now i have a mk4 escort cab which shows the same final drive as the s1. so im thinking if i drop the box out of the 3i strip the output shaft and install that in the s1 box i can fit the rs1800 ib5 or the s2 box in the 3i.
What do you guys recon none of them move more than a few miles per year there just ornaments realy, would also buy me some time to find some boxes/shafts
I helped a friend of mine bring home a MK3 Escort convertible yesterday. Already gathering information as he's already got a S1 engine lying around.
MK5 and later Escorts had the same bellhousing like your Escort MK3 with the four stud mounting pattern. So you can use (as a spare) ANY MK5 Escort and later BC box. Important: You NEED a front starter one.And keep in mind: RS2000 16V and some 1,8 Zetec (especially the 130 bhp version) and turbo diesel cars had a MTX box which is totally different.
Easiest to find would be the last 1.4 CVH EFI (PTE) boxes. Mostly the same gear ratios as your S1 plus from 96 on it's a IB5 box. Means you can use the Puma/Fiesta '99 Zetec-S linkage. These came with a shorter throw.

Just remember you'd want to swap your LSD into the new box

That's right. But right now Tondeur wants to get his S1 off the lift and using a MK5 and later box is a simple swap right now and keeps the car moving on its own. Gets him a lot of time to think of options or to rebuild his box.
