now ive been a mechanic for nearly 30 years but boxes always go to box specalist. impatient and curious i pulled it apart and the what im assuming is the final drive that connects to the crown wheel is shot!
looks like it is the only integral gear on the shaft but lucky it`s not the diff.
i have seen and scoured several posts about ratios and box swapping so i know there are some pretty nerdy folk here lol.
1 can any point me in the direction of some good detailed reading on this box as everything comes up ib5 and t5.
2 anyone have a reliable source for a replacement shaft or alternative that will fit. shes in bits on the ramp and i have so many customers cars todo but it seems pointless to put it back together just to strip it back out.
appreciate any info
many thanks Tony

Not a gearbox specialist, too.
But there's some things I know:
There are different (LSD) differentials. ?seven or five? bolts. Don't know ift it's Series 1/2 or 1986/7 when Ford modified some minor technical details (push down reverse etc.).
S1 RSTurbo had a 4.27 final drive, the XR3i MFI cars with 105 bhp (usually) had the same final drive. Not sure about the convertibles. Especially on MK3 Escort as those were just labelled as 1.6i. But keep in mind you can NEVER be sure about this. It seems like Ford sometimes just threw parts that were lying on the shelves into their cars. We've seen a lot of funny and unusual things.
And don't forget to give Ford a call...Sometimes they have quite rare things still as NOS. Maybe also somewhere in mainland Europe.
When you're not able to get the spare part you need or a whole S1 gearbox an early MFI box might be worth a try.
