Whilst looking through eBay I came across an auction for a ST170 rolling shell, it had the engine and gearbox, wheels and a door mirror removed, although a couple of 15 inch focus wheels had been put on the rear.
This got me thinking so I placed a bid which was the only one so the car was mine.
On Friday 11th March I went to London with a couple of wheels for the fronts and collected it. First impressions are good it only has one large hole in a sill and a windscreen wiper missing that I did not know about
Managed a bit of time on it today and fitted the correct rear wheels and a door mirror
The front of the car has been stripped down to enable the engine and gearbox to slide under. For now I have fitted a ST170 short engine with a RS cylinder head, timing belt and tensioner found in the shed from an unknown source along with all the other parts, standard 2.0 flywheel and clutch and mtx 5 speed gear box. To get this to work I am having to fit a fuel return, the pipe and fuel pump housing have been removed from my other focus and will be fitted soon.
After fitting the metal return pipe the return hose could be fitted from the fuel rail, then I had to drop the fuel tank and remove the pump canister, put the st170 pump in the standard unit which after refitting everything completed the fuel system.
Just to see what would happen I tried to start the engine, it would start and idle just, but as soon as I tried to rev it it died, so assumed the ecu would not run it.
The st170 and RS ecu have 104 pin plugs all others are 60 pin. My RS project had the ecu from a 1.8 Focus fitted which meant I was not able to plug in the RS ecu so the obvious solution was to remove the ecu's and wiring harnesses and swap them around. After removing both the only difference I can see is one wire to the fuel pump relay which the st170 does not seem to need as the engine starts and runs lovely.
Next to do is the cooling, power steering, bleed the clutch, gear lever and cables and more
