St 170 swap in 1.3 escort mk4
Hi,
I am wanting to engine swap my 1.3 bonus escort mk 4 am leaning towards a st170 engine (or possibly black top) also wanting to turbo the engine how hard is the engine management side to get the engine running, will I need to do a bit of extra wiring due to the car originally being mfi or can I get a management system with it all ready to plug and play on either engine
Thanks Will

First of all it's a lot of mechanical work involved.
The ST170 came with a 6-speed transmission, neither the gearbox cradle nor the driveshafts will fit. You CAN use a BC gearbox, but then you'll have to change a lot of things like flyhweel, clutch etc.
As mentioned above, many MK4 Escorts didn't come with MFI or EFI so you need an fuel tank of an injection model (with internal swirl pot), fuel lines, fuel pump mount, fuel filter mount etc.
I'm not sure about the engine mount, but as far as I remember the easy option like with the first Zetec engines (use the CVH engine mount and cut a little piece out) won't work.
Compared with the MK4 and the first Zetec engines the ST170 is a quite complex engine, especially on the electronical side. It's much, much, much more involved just to "stick the ecu and the wiring onto MFI". Immobiliser will give you a headache. On modern cars from ~2000 on there are so many cross links between electronic components that these cars might not run when components are missing. While fitting an early 130 hp-spec Zetec was quite easy to do as you could run this as a mostly "standalone" engine just by connecting EIGHT cables of the Zetec engine wiring loom to the car's main wiring loom the ST170 probably will never run once you start to cut the Focus' wiring loom.
You COULD run the Zetec with an aftermarket ignition/injection system like an Omex, Haltech etc., but then you'll have to think about the VTC. Unless you get a map that fits your engine AND your ECU you won't get this run properly. Same with the variable intake system.
Easiest way to get Zetec power for a MK4 escort:
Use a 1,8 Litre Zetec/Escort unit with 105 or 130 bhp.
You can upgrade this to 2.0 by using a Mondeo engine but with the oil pump, oil sump, the water pump, alternator, accesory belt and ECU of the 1.8.
And before you start to ask more question about how to do this...
There are probably a hundred threads about it here.
