1.6 cvh bearings
Has anyone got a minute to explain the process on changing the crank bearings on a 1.6 cvh mfi ? Haynes manual says engine has to be out but heard i can do it in.
I know to start with dropping the sump again then its all new from here.

If the engines staying in, then you need to remove the gearbox as the crank wont drop enough to do it that way.
Given whipping a CVH out takes 30-45mins max, I'd be taking it out as plus its easier to do the sump with it in front of you upside down that on your back under the car.
Risk of crap getting whipped up into the crankcase whilst your on the floor/with the underneath exposed is far greater than being able to move the block to a proper "clean" area too. All IMO/experience, again case of quick bodge fix or doing it properly. Crank bearings dont take well to an unclean environment or being manhandled due to having to pull cranks out at dodgy angles or whatever.

Not sure if its same engine but if its the one that had no oil psi before changen them will be a waste of effort and money as it wont fix the problem sadly.. the top end would of suffered alot then it goes down from there bores piston rings etc etc

it needs taken out car and pulling apart bores will need to be checked for marks/scoren etc etc.. without lookn at it in bits you will never know but the head you had rebuilt will need doing again the camshaft and lifters etc would of suffered with no oil. dependn how good you are at doing stuff it can be done at home but if you carnt it may just pay you to buy another engine and slip it in you no

What other parts should i change/check when i have the engine out , mainly on the bottom end - i now have a little knowledge on the top. Gutter though.

On the head will be lifters and camshaft the cam shells in head.. have you drained oil out engine so check for metal parts in oil ? the cvh engine is a good engine to learn on i rebuilt one when i was 15 year old as part of my corse at school lol.. i always remember the guys face it was a mk4 estate escort i think the idea was to remove it and refit it but i pulled it out and pulled it to bits had it all in tubs marked whats what lol.. but i got that back together and running in a few lessons
Really simple rebuild would be:
Mains and big end bearings
Oil pump (depends on state, but for the price I'd just replace as you never really know if you've got all swarf out)
Crank will probably need a polish, if not regrind
Bores hone at minimum
Oil pickup removed and cleaned properly
A proper proper block wash (all galleries cleaned, every nook and crannie blasted) <- This is probably the easiest bit of work, but equally the most important as you need to get every bit of swarf out, if you dont then you could do everything else perfectly and be back to a fucked engine within half hour of running
Then things like headgasket/headbolts/sump gasket on top
CVH was my first engine build, and other than the hone (well actually ended up being a rebore for me,lol) which went to an engineer, I did the lot and that engine ran on for many many happy miles.

yep as above main thing is to make sure every bit of junk etc is cleaned out from everywere you can do this with pipe cleaners for parts such as camshaft crank etc the block does have allan bolt caps on oil ways and water i think if u can get them out with a bit heat and when block is bare on a nice day a trip to petrol station jet wash blast it all out best you can then dry it off with oil towels quick spray over with wd40 in bores etc stops any rust startn and away you go putting it back together lol
