Default Ford Sierra 1.8 cvh, what is this pipe

Hi all,

I have a split in one of the pipes. But not sure what the use of it is or what it's called.

Seems to be very hot, but feeds in to the air intake......which doesn't make sense.

I have attached a photo, as you can see it comes from the engine block in to the air filter.

Ah, just thought with it going to the air intake, wouldn't having warmer air rather than cold air be a negative thing?

What's the best thing to replace it with as mine is splitting due to age.

It’s to prevent carb icing. As said a stat opens to allow the airflow via the original ducting. As you say hot air is never a good thing, as it loses density, thus oxygen.

It’s only an issue in cold conditions, so I wouldn’t worry. Some older cars either had it piped permantely, or an elbow for winter or summer to adjust

on a 1800 cvh you will be better off pulling all that off it and fit performance air filter and give carb a bit sortn out as its a terrible design on them and power is terrible due to all this.. it was designed to be a save fuel thing in 90s

Pretty new to all this. Not sure how I would fit a performance air filter. I changed the standard airfilter just recently as it looked properly beaten up.

Fitting a new performance air filter is fairly straight forward and as said will make a difference to the breathing of the carb and performance. You may find some of the kits come with fitting instructions to help you.
