It’s to prevent carb icing. As said a stat opens to allow the airflow via the original ducting. As you say hot air is never a good thing, as it loses density, thus oxygen.

It’s only an issue in cold conditions, so I wouldn’t worry. Some older cars either had it piped permantely, or an elbow for winter or summer to adjust
