Default ECU Probs.

Started as intermittent fault, no start/no crank/ key not recognised code 13. Now total failure. Change Transponder ring, fitted good ECU no change. Skilled engineer has tried to communicate with three scanners and computer cannot communicate with ECU. Any one experienced this problem. Engineer seems to think it may be a defective or failing part controlled by the ECU effecting it's working.
Any idea's chaps
Thanks
Mick

Anyone checked the wiring from the transponder or the wiring from the OBD port or the wiring at the ECU, or the ECU earth or the ECU plug pins?

Mondeo MK1 1996 2ltr Automatic. 5D/HB. Suggesting the OBD Port to ECU good point. He has been checking wiring at plug pins and wiring at plug. Just trying to help with any similar situations experienced by members. Good ECU earth.
Thanks for comments

Ive played with a fare few of these ecu's as its a hobby of mine.
You have the Passive Anti Theft in the ecu and you have the Active Anti Theft in the body control model. Also known as the gems model.

Its a long time since ive done a silvertop but there should be an led in the clock ?

What's it doing ?

There is a red light next to clock. Turn on ignition rapid flashing and then 1 Flash followed by 3 Flashes. Or do you mean an LED in the Clock display. I will say that I admire you if you tackle ECU's as a hobby. Rock on.

Thanks

It’s a long time since I’ve had my hands on a mk1. If your able to read the blink code it’s the correct led.

Does your car have the Obd1 or Obd2 plug that you can not connect to ?

i would think you have a wiring fault due to its age. The early Zetec’s really suffered with crumbling insulation and corrosion of the conductor, the Black Death.

With a multimeter and the ignition in the run position and the ecu removed. Check you have 12v+ on the one permanent live and two switched lives.
Again 12v+ at the transceiver.

check the earths have continuity to earth. Again with the transceiver.

The gems modual cuts some earth paths as part of the active anti theft so if you have a relay in this that has failed it could cause this.

Last Mondeo ecu I worked on was the mk3 Mondeo St220 over the summer.

Got a photo ?

is yours a petrol or a diesel ? I may have wrongly assumed petrol.

They 100 % used that plug on all petrols from at least 96 to 2007

It has a round plug connector on transponder looking inside the pins are numbered so I assume the pins are the same wires as green square plug. The car was first registered on 1/01/1996 so assume constructed 1995.
Have a good day
