Default Blown Gearbox?

I'm afraid my 92 4X4 is languishing in a parking space tonight after i assume the gearbox has blown. I don't profess to be any what mechanically minded however changing down through some twisties (after a long sustained high speed motorway run at 90 mph for an hour) the car locked up after a loud noise drove another mile then did the same however this time wheels locked and could not move it. I managed to get car off the road - as it was not budging for a while there and I drove it very slowly to a parking space 200m away after doing the same again (loud clunk then wouldn't budge)

Car is safe tonight but need to get it moved tomorrow. previous symptoms have been jumping out of 2nd (not often) and last week had strong clutch smell. Car is original, no mods and 70,000 miles.

Any ideas?

I guess it could also be a diff. I would get it off the ground and start checking what is turning freely and what not.

I would just get a second hand replacement. They normally don’t have any problems with standard power.

"after a long sustained high speed motorway run at 90 mph for an hour" - Was wondering where in NZ you managed to do this, then noticed you were in Barcelona. (Auckland motorway probably long enough - but never empty enough unfortunately.) Cheers David
