Default Saff 4x4 starter issues

Posting here now , incase anyone had simular, as not looked into much yet

Sometimes the starter motor just seems to spin and not engange, and other times it does but get a grinding / catching noise as if the cars ingear.

All ive done so far is take the starter off and try it on its own with some leads. All seems to run ok and fires the cog out and returns without issue.

planning on cranking the engine round manually and inspecting all the fly wheel teeth.

Failing that, do i just spunk some cash on a new starter? or drop the gearbox and check the fly wheel and clutch is all good, tight and as it should be?

I would be suprised if the flywheel teeth are shot, sounds more likely to be a problem with the starter motor to me even though it seems ok out of the car.

Could be the bendix is worn, but yes one of the two.

Removing the starter and inspecting is the easiest/first thing to do.

At least the gearbox doesn't have to come out. Hopefully it's just a starter.

Check the engine earth, it could be high resistance giving weak power at the starter when cranking. Put a jump lead from the starter casing to neg on the battery, see if that improves it.

Fairly easy fix then,I thought it sounded like a knackered starter and nothing more serious.
