Default propshaft couplings

Hi,

I have the early type thick (~47mm) propshaft coupling (Sierra cosworth 4wd) what i need to replace. I did some research here and found that Ford does not sell it any more.

However i have found a STC brand coupling listed for Escort V 1.6 petrol with almost the same dimensions minus the centre bearing:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Coupling-...955f%7Ciid%3A1

Before i order this part is there a way it will not fit for some reason? Has anyone had any experience with this part?

thanks

I fear that you MIGHT get some vibration with that as the centre does not have any support. I managed to buy a second hand donut in good nick. some people have solid mounted theirs but MarkK on here thinks that could break the gearbox and others have changed the prop to one piece.

Do let us all know if you try this and what the outcome is.

I wonder if the likes of Powerflex could be persuaded to make a new part if they though there would be a market for them?

There is also a type of CV joint that can be used but I forget the name of them.

I will let all know if it works. I am wondering why the later model sierras and escort cosworths had NO centre support/bearing at all in their couplings, Maybe Ford realized that it's not necessary...? Ford produced the centre bearing type for 1-2 years only as far as i know, later did not, so i assume it cannot be that important.

convert the gearbox output to later 4x4 /esc cos including the front part of the rear prop, then you can use the easily obtainable later rubber coupling that doesn't have the centre bearing in it
i've done this myself on seb=veral race car gearboxes
