Default cosworth identity??

Just been reading an old post about YK2RS,(you know the one ).
People saying it isnt a real cosworth because ford didnt build it or stamp the floor.

I am going to buy a new (brand new shell) which obviously wont have stamps. So if i re-shell my car into this one ,will this car get a vin and stamps relative to my existing cosworth. As i seem to remember reading that if you use enough parts from the original car(points system)the new shell recieves the id from said cosworth!

Will this car be allso deemed a kit car as so many people where calling Paul S`s car,or was it that he used new cosie and saf cossie parts .Hence it didnt tally up on the pionts system to recieve an original ID.

All feedback appreciated befor i go out and spend a shit load of dosh on a new cosworth shell,or is it as it is as we know just a sierra base shell without ID ,Cans of worms ?

Cheers Clive

if its a brand new shell ya can have the plate transfered over based on the points system

the brand new cossie wasnt a cosie as such as they only made a certain amount and if all could buy a shell and call it a cossie then whats to stop ya calling it a 1,l replica

its not a genuine cossie and as such the rsoc should not recognise it, but for some reaosn they do

either way if ya want the old plate on follow the points sytem or just dont tell em if the shells new and not been registered and has no id, then they cant Q plate it where the other way there is a risk they can

good luck either way

You don't legally keep the VIN number from the old car, but MIGHT get the donor registration number.

Using a new shell (with receipt) and transferring sufficient parts from the donor should avoid any risk of a Q but it makes sense to clarify what you are doing with the local VLO in advance. Apart from anything else, they have to allocate a new chassis number for the new shell.

They might insist on an SVA (tougher MOT at about £180) and they will want the shell stamped in one or maybe two places with that VIN.

Stamping your old chassis number into the new shell won't look correct and if the feds ever discover it, then you will almost certainly be stuffed on a Q plate at best.

But reading the thread on martins escort,it says he can 100% leagal use his id becouse of the points system.
I would also be useing the parts of my car that he lists.
Why wouldnt it look right, what do they do then surely a stamp is a stamp, who stamps it anyhow??

Get your original ID carefully welded into the new shell

If I were in your situation I would definatly use the original floor section containing the chassis numbers, would save any DVLA agro as well as hassle when the time comes to sell the car

Ford stamp their numbers up from underneath in what seems to be a special font - I've tried to get stamps to match and not been able to. Even if I did, you then have to ensure they are dead straight and perfectly spaced. So far as DVLA are concerned, anyone can stamp the number in, but they want to see it and it has to show on the MOT and/or SVE certificate. They told me to stamp mine in the normal place and in another concealed place, and to attach a stamped metal plate where the VIN plate would usually be on the slam panel.

If the authorities found the chassis number has been altered or tampered with it puts the legitimacy of the car in question and you get a Q or the car could even be impounded.

The point system only works with a new shell. New shells don't have VIN numbers so you need the DVLA to issue one, which are recognisably different from a Ford VIN. You can keep the original reg number but not the VIN, though I have heard of Ford dealerships just stamping the old VIN into the new shell without problems. Doesn't make it right though.

Using a used shell is automatically a Q plate, unless you just leave the car registered as it was on the replacement shell and keep quiet about the rest (or just record an engine change).

it is perfectly legal to reshell a car using a new shell and keep the original identityinsurance companys do this on very young vehicles.....you are only replacing a part of the car.
i have sold hundreds of fords over the years and had things like rs turbo,s at under a year old that have been reshelled BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY and have not been write offs and have kept original plates and are perfectly legal

it is only illegal if you reshell an existing car with a secondhand shell and try to change the id
