I'm on doing a bit of work to my cossie. It's had an oil leak since owning the car. I've got the gear box out and I'm about to replace the rear crank shaft oil seal.

Does anyone have any tips how to fit the seal. It's been years since I've fitted one and with it been a bit of a pig of a job in scared to fit it in case the fooker leaks again. I've got a circular tool to put the rear crank shaft oil seal in.

good luck, ive renewed several on my cossies over the yrs and they have always leaked again,ive tried different makes and none have lasted more than a few months

 

Get a traditional pinto type one with a spring. the newer design seals are great for fresh builds, but if you've got a slight groove worn in your crankshaft from the old seal, they're very likely to leak again. I replaced mine a couple of times before fitting the old style. which worked much better

 

 

I've just Checked my oil seal now and it's too big lol.

Thank you. I will be pissed off if the fooker leaks again. I was thinking about soaking the seal in some oil before I fit it.

 

you don't need to soak it, just put a smear around the inside of the seal before you put it on.

 

Glen wot you stressing about getting the old one out is harder than putting the new one in and you hsha already got the old one out .
dont forget to put a very small dab of grease in the end of the crank / input shaft bearing . Is the clutch set up ok means you have it all apart ??

 

I just don't want the fooker to leak again cause it will be a chew on job to replace it again lol. The clutch system is ok. I will just stick with the cable operation.

I will put a bit of grease on the gear box main shaft too so hopefully this will help when fitting the gear box back in.
