Default Mk4 xr3i mfi bad running

Got a problem with my 89 xr3i cab. 1.6 mfi . I think it’s running rich and it seems to not be getting enough air. If I pull the vacuum pipe off where the cold start valve is on the inlet manifold it runs a lot better due to sucking in more air. Anyone know what could be causing this please and how to resolve. Thanks!

Mixture is probably out. Fuel pressure could possibly be poor.
Has it had a fuel filter recently? Always worth a punt for Ł20 and definitely wont do any harm

Have you had in on a gas analyser to actually check the mixture?
Could also be the WUR (warm up regulator) but without a fuel pressure gauge its pretty difficult to even do basic troubleshooting on the K-Jet system. Easy enough to make your own tho

Cool - they are such an overlooked and misunderstood part. Glad you found a mechanic who knew what they were doing

yeah there’s a chap local here who’s got a lot of knowledge when it comes to the k jet systems, got the old girl running today and it’s sorted.
