When doing a zetec turbo the common recommendation is to put a standard zetec cylinder head onto a st170 engine block. This is all well and good but I have not seen the cylinder heads being sold separately meaning you have to buy the whole engine, price seems to be around £200 with collection or shipping on top.

Looking on eBay you could buy the whole car for similar money so that is what I have done, collected today a 2002 focus saloon bought for the grand sum of £257 plus £23 for collection so a total of £280

First thing to do is remove any unwanted metal and take it to the scrap man to recoup some of the cost
Then before removing the engine and disposing of the car I would like to go to Santa Pod and send it down the drag strip, budget for car prep is nothing!! so the only way to achieve this is to borrow parts from my other cars

Saloons are more common in America than the hatches, so at least someone likes them!

Good luck with it, may as well cut as much as you can out of it (most of the rear inner arches and sills are probably gone anyway) and go and have some fun!

 

I see a lot of these saloons in Spain when working over there, also 4 door hatchbacks very rare to see a 2 door.

Did not get much time to play with cars over the weekend but did manage to make a start with the wheels. Scrap value is double if the tyres are removed so that is what had to happen.
Got the cutter out and sliced into the wheel and tyre on both sides which released the beads so the tyre could be removed with levers ( no levers then cut the tyre off ) the spare was a steel space saver and has also had the tyre removed in the same way.
On the car now is 15" focus alloys on the rear and 17" on the front

 

Over the last couple of days I have removed the seats, stripping them down and extracting any metal.
Price a couple of weeks ago was 11p per kg for steel, the front seat mount and slider is approx. 8kg and the bar in the headrest 750 grams so worth about £1 per seat, then there is the base and back and the rear seats so every little bit helps.
The steel space saver wheel is around 6kg.

I have a gearbox, steering rack, starter motor and alternator plus a few other bits kept from other cars which can be weighed in and then replaced once this car finally meets its end.

 

Wow price of steel has really gone down from when I last remember weighing in stuff!

 

Had a really good day removing more parts:

The bonnet, wings and crash bar
Battery ( small 50ah )
Exhaust manifold and cat
Air con compressor, radiator and pipe work
2 off small radiators and fan motor from the heater box
2 off motors from the cooling fans
4 off speakers ( total weight just over 2kg so 25p ish scrap )
also cut a bit of the dash bar















Put my apprentice to work on the dash, trouble is he wants to be paid with cider!!

 

Had another good afternoon working on the car. Removed the front hubs ( one had to be cut off ) discs and callipers and replaced them with st170 parts

 

Removed the final parts today, exhaust flexi section, engine mount, lower gearbox mount and the rear seat belts. All bolts and brackets etc. have been gathered up and put into a box, every little helps.
Its all now in the back of the car ready to be weighed in tomorrow.

 

The big weigh in:

4 off 15 inch alloy wheels = £33 ( £1 per kg)
catalytic converter = £20
battery = £6
motors = £2.40 ( 20p per kg )
gearbox/compressor/mounts = £9.60 ( 20p per kg )
ali rads & pipes = £4 ( 50p per kg )
steel = £14.19 ( 11p per kg )

so a big total of £89.19 but it was an 18 mile round trip so I will have to deduct a couple of litres of diesel say £3.19 so the final total was £86

 

I have been working on the car as and when time permitted and have made steady progress so time for an update:

The stainless steel exhaust manifold that did not fit properly ( see my other threads ) has been fitted along with the stainless exhaust, lower gearbox mount and shorter Auxiliary belt ( borrowed from my track focus )

A spare crash bar for my st170 has been fitted along with black wings and bonnet from my old st170

Inside has been stripped and lots of unwanted wires, and a few that are required have been removed from the loom. Gear lever raiser has been fitted ( due to go into my track focus )

The biggest problem has been getting rid of the mountain of waste plastic trim, carpet and seat foam etc but luckily I pass the local tip on my way to work or coming home so have just got rid of small amounts when I could, this has enabled me to keep to the budget !!

 

Only had a couple of hours to play on the car last weekend so removed the a.b.s pump block thingy, who needs brakes?

 

That seems a bit extreme for what it weights....

but i am watching with interest..

 

The unit weighs around 3.2kg with the plug and wires around 400 grams so yes not a great deal
But the reason for removing it was to trail fit the abs delete kit that I bought from pro-line motorsport earlier in the year for my other car, so all the old brake pipes have been removed and the new lines installed with cable ties.
My RS front seat has been borrowed and fitted, didn't fit a bucket seat as I did not wish to mess around with seat belts

Thanks, been down your way several times in the last 3 months but was not able to arrange a visit, next year I hope.

On the kits that run inside the car there is a break in the rear line to fit a bias valve. My idea for this car was to just join the lines together (will buy a valve and fit it when installed properly in my other car) but I bought the wrong joiner, the thread size is not 10mm but 3/8 so had to order another. The plan was to complete the install, bleed the brakes and then go to Santa Pod for the last rwyb of the year this Sunday 28th October then remove the parts I need and get rid of the shell, but as usual its all gone astray. I have been offered the chance to work in Spain which I could not turn down, this now leaves me with a problem as the next rwyb is in February and I have nowhere to store the car.

 

If you get really desperate Mate, I can probably find you a shed to put it in. Bit out of your way for the Pod, but it's possible. Promise I won't nick any bits off it

 

I have not been able to work on any of my projects for some considerable time, to enable some progress on my other Focus and to make some space for a new project I decided to end this one early.
All usable parts were removed and the shell sent for scrap.

Sorry it had to go as I needed the use of the trailer. The engine, gearbox, front suspension and brakes etc have all been installed into my other focus
