Default car security at events

Wasnt sure on which section to put this in.

However i am going to classic ford this weekend and really want to go in my mk2 fiesta. But as im staying over and will probably go for a meal on the saturday night i was wondering what others do for car security in public car parks around show times?

When I had my mk2 I used to have a big yellow handbrake to gear lever lock, obvious visual deterrent and depending how dodgy the area was I’d pull the king lead.

santa pod and some other venues like donington have a deserved bad reputation for theft, this is main reason people join clubs and fb pages to get their cars out of public car parks, or they take the family daily if not on a club stand

Are you camping overnight? If so you will be close to others in the dedicated camping area and much less likely to get your car stolen. If you are parking in the main public car parking area then yes security will be important.
Weather is supposed to be fine so should be a good show.

You also need to check the car after for magnetic trackers as a few have reported them being found after a car show

Buy a disclock as these are a pain to remove and the scum will move onto the next car.

I heard that as well but also a guy I spoke to last year at Classic Ford reckons one of his mates had parts stolen out of his engine bay in broad daylight!!! I always make sure I have a friendly chat with whoever parks next to me in the display area and ask them to keep an eye out on my car when I go for a look round and I do the same for them.

dont leave your bonnet open and unattended.

Back in the day people would wind your boost valve up or down so fuck your engine on the way home. I dont trust anyome so leave my bonnet shut most of the time at shows

Thieves are getting more brazen at car shows, I heard a storey that someone with a MK2 escort RS2K had his fuel tank strap nicked whilst the car was parked in the concourse area at a show, someone had the Roland’s to get under the car and remove it inside the show area, also heard stories of the tracker devices too, always worth checking your car before leaving a show and as said don’t leave your bonnet open whilst you are absent from the car.

Disc lock is a good deterrent but they need a bit of modding to make them more effective, namely two extra bars welded on the reverse side. Also have heard stories on them being removed by thieves and cars being stolen.

I am having a removable wheel on my car and we are adding a lock point on the cage if it is not practical to take the wheel with me.

been many reports over the years of parts being stolen off cars even in the club areas, pretty sure it was the pod where owner came back to find his car sat on ground with no wheels, going to be packed tomorrow at the pod as the sun is out so public car park field will be brimmed, I would be inclined to take a family runabout if parking in public car area

remember shane lynchs car being stolen from the pod and was on display too

Disclok and a tracker that will alert you if it moves.

In the grand scheme of things, neither are overly expensive. Not foolproof either of course, but every little helps

yes , that's often the main thing people want to see but I certainly wouldn't leave it open if I wasn't there ! there does seem to be a lot of naďve people in the car scene that think everyones a trusty honest sort because they like the same sort of cars!

I have had my Saff on display today at Classic Ford and yes the bonnet was up but only when I was with the car. Had a lot of interest and met some nice fellow Ford enthusiasts. The guy next to me had an Escort Cosworth and when he went for a look around he asked me to keep an eye on his car. When I went for a look around I closed the bonnet and he did the same for me and it worked out ok. Loads of cars and people there today although Classic Ford is the wrong name for the show now as there were lots of modern Fords including Focus RS,Focus ST and New Mustangs. It used to be pre 1990 cars but that seems to have gone by the wayside! There were plenty of proper classic Fords thankfully. Will post some photos tomorrow.

Back in the day Vauxhall made 4 Nova convertibles to test the concept. Only one survived, and some fucker half inched it from the hotel car park outside the gate of Billing Asbodrome. Never seen again.

Who remembers the Novas where you could remove the hazard switch turn it upside down and plug it back in and the ignition lights would come on??

It's a sad world we live in when people are going to car shows to pinch parts off other people's cars.

It was on here a few years back where people were pinching car parts off the trade sellers stands.

Unfortunately Glenn, low lifes and druggies will steal anything they can these days and have zero thought for anyone but themselves!!!

When I had my first car, Anglia 105e, another guy who was a telephone engineer like myself also had one in our depot. One afternoon when we were all going home he had lost his keys and was panicking a bit. I took my keys and they fitted his with no bother!! Mine even started his car and nobody could believe it!!! I wonder how many other Anglias my keys would have fitted. Great Ford security!!!

When I were a young copper, all shiny and new, there were two other hobbies at my nick , each with near identical MK2 Escorts. After a long night shift one of them stumbled out to the car park half asleep, and without realising it his keys opens and started the wrong escort. He got half way home before he noticed the stereo was different...

Car theft has always been about. At some periods in the 60s and 70s it was more rampant than the hot hatch theft craze of the early 90s. Manufacturers have never spent money on security unless they were forced to do so by legislation. It doesn't sell cars, doesn't make them money, so they don't like spending on it.

I don't know what they were like when new but my first car in the late 80's, a mark 2 escort, also started with the edge of a coin.

And all you had to do to get into it was pull the door weather strip off, push it down the gap towards the lock and it would pop open. Car security is still shit, have you seen that video on YouTube of a bloke opening a new transit with just a pair of mole grips?

Anything with windows is never going to be totally secure but they're far harder to start nowadays for your run of the mill thief. The professional theif will have bought the Ł5 gadget from ebay that bypasses the advanced in car security though

all Massey Ferguson tractors in the 60s, 70s, and early 80s if you pulled the engine dipstick out it fitted the Lucas ignition switch and fired them up!

I've heard about the transits been poor for security. I've never seen any vids but I will have a look at a few on you tube.

I still use my steering wheel bar lock bought many years ago, but you can only do so much, as I found out when some scumbag smashed my passenger window and nicked my road tax many years ago. Also, as mentioned, had a snap-off steering wheel mount as well on my old car, loved using that.

When you are driving along and scum A slams on in front and scum B pulls up behind gets out putting a machete to your neck [dont think a sheet of glass will stop him] and makes you vacate the car, jumps in your car and drives off leaving you scum B car to go home in! unfortunately all your locks will be as much use as a ladder to a carpet fitter, as for your tracker well your car will be stripped and sold in pieces all with RS tax added. All these devices are a deterrent only but certainly worth having, please dont think you are infallible.
