Default Mk3 mondeo air con.

Is any body clued up with air con systems on cars??

Mine has stopped working. I got the car regassed a few days ago. I've checked all fuses,I've checked to see if the pump clutch works(it does when I put a live feed to it).

I've found there is no live feed to the air con pump.

Where does It get it's live from? Will the live come from the engine ecu when the air con is switched on??

The ecu switches it. If it senses there is no pressure it will not switch the clutch in. The ecu switches the earth side of the relay.

If your sure there is no leaks get a meter on the relay. First call for me would be a pressure test to make sure it’s not leaked.

Agree with the above, but there is one quick test you can do, find the lower pressure trip switch (usually in the steel pipework) then pull the connector off and with the air con switched on bypass the switch with some wire and see if the compressor kicks in, this will tel you if the relays are working and that it may be a faulty switch or as said a leak causing a real lower pressure

Where is the relay located. I've been looking on the internet for ages and can't find where the relay is.

The low pressure switch behind the osf bumper is getting a live feed to the switch and then it goes to the high pressure switch, behind the head light. This switch is a 4 pin switch. This also getting a live. As said it also get a live from the low pressure switch.

I'm thinking it could be a faulty relay and this is why I'm not getting any power to the air con pump.

Or does the air con pump get it's power from the engine ecu???

I've removed the 2 pin low pressure switch( behind bumper and wheel arch liner) I've put a bit of wire in the connector and still nothing.

This switch must be working, as said above. There is a live going to this switch and the live comes out and goes to the 4 pin plug behind the head light.

I've had another quick look at it today. The air con pump kicks in for about 2 seconds if that then cuts back off.

I just can't understand why there isn't in power at the pump all the time??

you have a few switches, in the pipework that you've found and there's another one in the drivers side wheel arch liner hidden away

it could also be that the drier has filled up and the gas can't gas any more and, in one of the pipes going from the wing through the arch and into the engine bay there is, for the want of a better word, a spring

this has been the cause of issues in the past on other cars as it stops the flow of gas

on mine i've had the pressure switch fault and the earth return from the pump clutch fault too so if it's the relay only then hang on and i'll post a link

Thanks for that info Dojj. I've actually read all that when I've been searching for this fault. My mate (Black some of you may remember him) came round today with his diagnostic tester.

On the tester it's saying one of the pressure switches isn't working. Now this has confused me cause as said above the low pressure switch is getting a live and a live is coming out of the switch. When you disconnect this switch the l8ve coming out of the switch isn't there. So this to me indicates that the switch is working??

My brother in law has a diesel mk3 so tomorrow I'm gonna Rob some bits off it to try and get mine to work.
So does anyone know if there is a separate relay for the air con apart from the full throttle one in the engine bay fuse box.

Today I swapped the pressure sensors off a working mondeo. Shock that didn't fix the fault.

So I think now I'm.gonna have to trace the wire back now to see why the air con pump isn't getting a live. Today the air con pump didn't even click in for a second like it was yesterday.

as said mate, that little spring in the air pipe won't show on any test until you swap the pipe

but i'm not sure how this is tested

you might be tracing the wires all over the place so start with the dash buttons to see where they go to

again, look on the talkford site for the wiki for doing the facelift climate swap and you should get the wiring colours

is aircon regassing something that needs done routinely at regular service intervals or just when you feel its not performing well?

You are supposed to have it done yearly as it can get damp in the system causing various corrosion issues. You are also supposed to use it regularly as the oil moving round the system keeps the seals lubricated.

I usually get mine done every 2-3 years. Always make sure they do a proper service not just a refill, a full service will vac out all the old stuff, pressure test with nitrogen before being filled.

Dojj from what I've read when the rad fan is coming on when he air con button is pressed this means the controls in the car are ok.

I've ordered Haynes manual so hopefully this will help.

Tbh I'm getting a bit bored of this car now and I fancy a bit of a change.

So today I fixed my air con fault. My Haynes manual came today. Well that was a waste of time. There was no wiring diagram for the air con.

I knew the engine ecu would send a live feed to the air con pump. So I had a quick look at the big wiring loom that comes out of the way. I found the loom had rubbed through on the osf inner wheel arch.

You can see here where it's rubbed through the protective cover.

Pic of the car.

So since I searched for ages trying to find an answer i hope when some people GOOGLE the fault they find this page and I hope it will help some people out.

Defo matey. When things go wrong with my cars my brain just goes into overdrive and I can't stop thinking about what could cause the fault.

Do you wanna buy it? It would look nice outside your house. Ł1200 pound as it is with the head unit tv head rest monitors full heated 8 way adjustable seats. I've just put new front discs on it and rear handbrake cables. I've also just bought 2 spare alloys cause I was gonna refurb them all again.

Damn, I was hoping to find chaffed wires !!

I did however notice the wires going into this block. Do they look 'fiddled' with ?

Hi, yes I realised you posted them to help others. I used them to go and look at mine.

Mine hadn't rubbed through like yours in that place.

Undid that bolt and looked at the connection but all looks good, need a multi meter I guess.

When you switch the air con on using the button in the dash,it sends a live to the pump. You could use a bit of wire and attach it to the battery. Then put the other end of the wire into the electrical pins/plug on the air con pump.

doing this will energise the air con pump magnet on the pulley so it should lock in.

This was 4 years ago. I've got a different car now. I wonder if it's to do with the sensors on the heater box behind the dash.
