Default Quick question. Original colour of the cvh engine block

I'm restoring a 1990 Fiesta Xr2i. I've media blasted almost everything underneath the car, and also the engine. I think the engine block was originally black, but can't be sure. No colour is left on it. I assume the sump is also black. Am I right? If it is, is it matt or gloss or satin? If I'm wrong, can someone tell me what colour it is.

Thanks

Whatever colour the bare metal is - I'm not sure if the blocks had some kind of minimal rust protection but they def weren't painted. Just wire brush/ wool & dust off thoroughly and you'll be as close as you can get. Shouldn't rust anyway on the outside in normal use unless there's a leak somewhere

Don't think it'd hurt to paint it though while you have the chance, even on a resto

They had a black transit primer from factory just to make them look a little nicer nd to help prevent the looking rusty during warranty really.

On some, you will see the coating flaking off near the edges.

i would go with a simple etch primer to start and then black base with a satin lacquer to finish for longevity.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have blasted the block clean, and noticed that rust had started to appear after a day or so. I just painted it with a straight to metal black satin paint, and it looks well. Didn't really think about a lacquer actually. Good idea.
