My plan is to strip and thrash mt A210 merc at hot hatch days at knockhill. Its sorned and the mot 's ran out. Is it legal to remove the number plates and tow to the events using an A frame . Is that legal or would I need a trailer?
A frames are only legal to next point of safety. Everything over 700kg or 750 I can’t remember has to be towed by something with a breaking system

looking on ebay looks like I can pick up a trailer for about £400/£500 so that's not to bad. what about one of these type of front wheel dollies?

ok looks like a trailer will be the best option. looking online I can pick up an old trailer for about £500 . the cost of keeping it road legal will be more than that plus if I crash it I wont be stuck with no lift home.
not looked at hiring a car transporter, a quick online search says its about £100 a day. its a gamble whether the car lasts 5 events or more to offset the cost against buying an old trailer
I think that's probably a decent shout for a couple of events to see how it goes before deciding whether to buy.

I'd hire a transporter if I where you and if you got really into it then you know you can justify buying and storing a trailer. Would defo make a trackday more enjoyable as you'd drive it like you stole it lol.
Becareful about buying a second hand trailer as they can have all sorts of problems, bent axles probably being the worst and most expensive - check tyre wear for that one; it should be even.
Like Jon says, if you tow any vehicle and either front or rear wheels are on the ground then it needs Mot, tax, insurance.

that maybe true ^ but you dont have to find £3000 to buy a new one plus you dont have to maintain it or store it when not in use and most reputable hire firms have the latest low rider trailers with winches/tilting beds etc and if only using 5 times a year thats 250

£50 a weekend sounds like a good plan as well. Even though I'm old and have all the licence entitlements ive never towed a trailer before. There's a first time for everything though....just checked locally, £35 on a Saturday or £70 for the weekend. that's the best option just now .

The small ones we service at work have a ram at the front before the hitch. As the car brakes the weight of the trailer moving forward compresses the ram and operates the brakes
Nobody in the world knows the legalities of towing, because they're so fucking stupid and complicated.
And VOSA certainly dont know, because they do not exist.
But it's always been that via A Frame etc the towed vehicle becomes a trailer, negating the need for being road legal....but you're still into the legalities of a trailer, brakes, lights etc.
And at which point if you did unhich it....is it then still a trailer, or back to a car again ? It's an arse.
A proper trailer is about the only surefire way of trying to be legal...again within towing weights, licenses etc etc

Ordinary coppers don’t know the rules so ignore it so chances are your not get pulled what ever your doing lol. If it go’s wrong then vosa and the traffic cops who do know the rules turn up.
Thanks for the heads up about vosa not existing them fookers have been turning up at my work for years pretending to exist and going on about tacho law checking are tacho work equipment and records are legal and right and what fines they can dish out. Never knew they was pretending I’ll tell them to fook off next time
but I guess your right as there now called the dvsa

The only bit of advice I'm going to give if your thinking of moving a car around on a trailer or truck or dolly check your license to see if you can do wot you won't to do as you could be in hot water if your not licensed
