yes but you might need more like 10k on top of your series 2 for a good one

Have a look at the thread by 1rickz posted on 18/09/2017 basically asking the same thing. He reckoned he viewed 2 Dogs as he called them both with issues and priced at Ł12 to Ł13k so like him you have to keep looking until you find a good one. There are fewer 2wd Saffs around than 4x4s. Which model are you thinking of? As for the ride comfort it depends what has been done to the suspension. If you buy a standard car it will have in most cases a smoother ride than a lowered , poly bushed etc example. My 2wd is lowered, with Koni front struts with Eibach springs and Bilstein shocks on the back with Eibach springs and poly bushed throughout. It holds the road well but you do feel the bumps and I try to avoid big potholes. Never bothered me but some people prefer a softer ride. There are lots of options including coil overs etc its all down to personal preference.
Hope you find a nice one and enjoy it.

Having had both over the years, and now owning one of each, I would say the Sapphire drives much better than the mk4.

The mk4 will always feel more nimble, and arguably handles better but the Sapphire is a great driving car with a better spec.

2wd Saff is the best driving, closely followed by the 4x4. I'd say you are looking at Ł15k upwards for a nice tidy car with a decent spec these days but its a bonus if you can do bodywork.

I liked both of mine for different reasons. Saph feels more planted and is quicker but S2 was still quick and cheaper to mess around with.
Both cars are fun but I've kept my saph and my s2 is gone so for me the saph would be the choice.

I've never liked mk4 escorts myself but have been obsessed with mk3's since I was a nipper. I'd still get rid of my saph Cossie for a mk3 escort even now but that's only because the mk3 escort was the only car I ever wanted (had loads over the years) but at the time I wanted the power of the Cossie. The prices of escorts now are creeping up so much I'll never be able to afford one alongside the Cossie

I've owned both. The sapphire is in a different league from the RS turbo. They handle, stop and drive a lot nicer than a mk4.

Would I pay what decent Sapphires are going for now? I don't think so. You could be loads of other far better cars for the same money.
