Default Sierra steering bush conversion

Hi, has anyone here converted their sierra from bush to bearing on their steering Column?
My stearing column has a lot of play at the bulkhead and I've heard there is a bearing conversion.....
Thanks, dave

It was a common mod for kitcars with Sierra running gear. Have search for Locost lower steering column bearing.

You keep the sleeve that fits on the column and turn it down or sand it down so it fits in to a 25mm self centring bearing.

They come with several mounting options.

I did mine I don't have pictures and the cars locked away at the mo waiting an engine. But funny enough I was in Cromwell tools the other day and I see they sell the same bearings

Took me a while to find It!
That is a serious Rebuild! Lovely car....
Do you have a number for the bearing and Housing? I might be able to source it locally from an engineering supplier...

Cheers,
Dave

I found it best to make a template up

Trial fitted it from the outside

Before putting my back out and lying upside down on the drivers seat to fit it on the inside

I also made this alloy bush to replace my original perished rubber one, steering is brilliant very responsive and actually isn't to harsh either

I have one problem, the diameter of the plastic insert is 23.6mm in places.....
I'll need a new one even if I upgrade to the bearing.....

Hi All

My question can you still adjust the steering once the bearing is installed?

I have a bearing replacement too for my sapph but not sure to install if I loose adjustablity?

is it better to put on inside or outside of firewall / bulkhead?

Cheers

In what way do you want to adjust yours? It doesn't change anything that the original plastic bush did apart from support the shaft better.

I put mine on the inside to protect it from the elements but it is a cunt to fit/change.

Hi Adam

I'm referring to the adjustable steering column and wheel. So will I still be able to tilt and trim the complete assembly once seated?

Cheers

I've done a complete u turn on this and bought a new old stock 4 piece kit.

I figured that the original has lasted over 30 years so this one should outlast Me!

Thanks for all your comments....
