Hello, I bought a set of gaz coilovers for my XR4I project a few months ago and have just got around to fitting them I've fitted the fronts and realised the wheels won't sit flat on the hubs due to hitting the coilovers. The coilovers where bought from gaz as 2wd cosworth spec with uprated poundage springs due to the heavier V6 and I was under the naive impression that they'd be a straight fit!

I take it the cossy hubs are different and I'm going to need to source some (sigh) ? What other bits will I need such as brakes tca's and steering arms?

Steering arms are the same. But if you are going to get 2wd Sapph Cosworth hubs you will also need the TCAs. If you get 3dr Cosworth hubs (better than Sapph Cosworth) the standard TCAs will fit.

 

Cheers Marc, I'll go on the hunt for some hubs brakes and tca's now! Next time I'll do a bit of research.

 

Thats weird as i fitted 2wd coilovers to standard sierra hubs with no issues, you say your wheel hits the coilover, what wheels are you running which part of the coilover is the wheel touching? In my head ive got a picture that its the standard wheels and they are touching the adjustable spring platform?? If this is the case even if you change the hubs it will still do this, you will need to space the wheels a little

 

The 2wd cosworth coilovers will fit the standard hubs. The problem is that the standard hubs give less room for wheels than the cosworth hubs do. On a standard Sierra (with normal hubs) even the standard cosworth wheels don't fit without spacers. They rub the shock, not at the spring platform, but at the side of the shock tube. So it doens't really matter if it's a standard shock or a coilover, as the tube is just as thick. Of course the cosworth wheels fit without problems on cosworth hubs.

 

It all depends upon the wheel offset, and what size tyres you are running.

Higher offset, the wheel will be Closer to the strut.

Big fat tyres will be closer to the strut.

I have Gaz golds, 8x17 et32, 235/40 tyres; and they fouled the spring platform on the coilovers.
What i ended up doing was buying shorter 6" springs so the spring and pkatform is above the tyre. And clearance is ok to the actual strut part.

I run a short spring on mine with the platform up high
And that gives me more clearance ( 10mm more )

 

out of interest why do you say the 3dr hubs are better?

The 3 door hubs have a better roll centre, they lower the tca and track rod end mount point

Look at the difference between standard sierra hub and 3 door hubs, the 3 door hub is on the left

 

After lowering the roll center on a Sapph is way too low due to the hubs. On a lowered 3dr the roll center is in a nice position for handling. Mike Rainbird wrote a nice article about the handling of cosworths that explains it a bit more: http://www.randbmotorsport.co.uk/sho...Suspension.pdf

 

I am running 17" RS7 spokes on my car. 7.5J et35 iirc. How much did the springs set you back out of interest?


That sounds like a better option than going for cossie hubs and brakes (£££), did you have to have them custom ordered by GAZ?

 

Aye it's the spring platform that the wheel was touching. I tried a 5mm spacer I had lieing spare on but the wheel is still nowhere near sitting flat on the hubs.

 

I have a pair of sapphire cosworth 2wd hubs that have been modified for ST170 300mm discs and mondeo mk3 calipers down the shed.

They fit behind RS 7 spokes without all the aggro of wheel spacers that comes with cosworth 4 pots

They would come with a used set of mondeo calipers and new ST discs and the spaces necessary to centre the calipers on the discs.

They need wheel bearings as have been acid dipped to remove rust, and one grease cap.

Also got a pair of used TCAs somewhere you could have also, you would need to get smaller bushes for the cross member end though.

£180 plus post for the lot if you're interested?

A set of springs including p+p are about £60
